Dear Neighbors,
Announcing the 2024 Viral Video Contest winners! Local students created engaging social media videos about preventing the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Thank you to all students who participated in this important conversation about sexual health.
Nearly half of all new sexually transmitted infections in the United States occur among people ages 15 to 24, making this age group critical to reach.
A diverse panel of judges reviewed submissions from 104 students. Cash prizes were awarded to the first, second, and third-place winners: $1,500, $1,000, or $500 for the top three winning teams, plus $500 for each winning team’s school.
With measles on the rise nationally, we urge everyone to be up to date on measles vaccinations and to watch for symptoms after travel or exposure. The best protection against measles is two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which protects you for life. If you know anyone travelling in the upcoming months, tell them to visit sccphd.org/measles.
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes have been found in East San Jose. This mosquito is of concern because it has the potential to spread diseases, like Zika, dengue, and yellow fever.
To protect yourself and others, drain, remove, or turn over anything that can hold water. These mosquitoes can breed in a capful of water.
Residents experiencing mosquito bites during the day should report them to the Vector Control District at (408) 918-4770 or vectorinfo@cep.sccgov.org.

Read more about what South Bay leaders like Public Health Deputy Director Rhonda McClinton-Brown and President San Jose/Silicon Valley NAACP Rev. Jethroe Moore II, are asking of the federal government. Read the op-ed they penned for The Mercury News.
