Slow Down, San Jose
Do you sometimes drive faster than you should?
In 2022, 670 people were killed or injured in speeding-related collisions.
The City of San José is trying to change that.
In 2015, the City adopted Vision Zero, which works to reduce and eventually eliminate traffic deaths, to show its commitment to making San José streets safer.
As one of many strategies, Vision Zero San José has launched a citywide campaign this month to spread the word about the impact of speeding and actions you can take to make our streets safer.
You can join the campaign, too. Here’s how:
- Practice safe driving habits.
- Obey the speed limit – just a few miles over the speed limit can mean the difference between life and death
- Keep your eyes on the road
- Watch out for people crossing, walking, and biking
- Plan ahead – leave early to give yourself plenty of time
- Keep an eye out for outreach teams around San José and take the “I Drive the Speed Limit” pledge!
- Test your safe driving IQ!
- Visit the Vision Zero Campaign website to see and share our Slow Down, San José video.
Using CalFresh EBT at Local Farmers Markets
Most Santa Clara County Farmers’ Markets now accept CalFresh EBT cards or WIC Farmers’ Market Checks.
A recipient can swipe their EBT card at the market info booth and get CalFresh dollars to spend at the market. Many markets also have a FREE matching program called Market Match. For every CalFresh dollar that is spent, they will receive a dollar-for-dollar match up to $15 per day to spend on fruits and vegetables.

November Themes
November is here and the holiday season is almost upon us. It is time to start promoting the November monthly themes! This month’s nutrition tips focus on making healthier holiday choices and dancing. Using EatFresh.org, you can also find great recipes using November’s Harvest of the Month, Apples.
Nutrition: Make Healthier Holiday Choices
The holidays are often filled with time-honored traditions, that include some of our favorite meals and foods. As you celebrate, think of little changes you can make this holiday season to create healthier meals and active days.
- Enjoy all five food groups at your celebration – fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy.
- Make sure your protein is lean.
- Bake healthier – substitute with healthier ingredients.
- Make exercise a part of the fun.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Be mindful of your portion sizes.
Harvest of the Month: Apples
A ½ cup of sliced apples is a good source of fiber. Fiber helps you feel full, helps keep your blood sugar level normal, and helps to avoid constipation. It is found only in plant foods.
Physical Activity: Dancing
Dancing is a fun and easy way to get physical activity! It’s great for improving circulation, toning muscles in the lower and upper body, and giving you more energy. Physical activity, such as dancing, can also lower stress and help you relax.
Here are some tips for getting started with dancing:
- Take a dance class as a local YMCA or parks and recreation community center
- Turn on your favorite music and do your own dance moves
- Go dancing with friends or family members
- Dance to a routine on an exercise DVD or videos on YouTube
Examples of dancing activities include: Zumba, Aerobic Dancing, Salsa, Ballroom Dancing, and Freestyle Dancing.
