West Cliff Path Improvements Moving Forward |
|
|
The City of Santa Cruz is moving forward with improvements to the West Cliff multi-use path at two locations near Getchell Street and Lighthouse Field/It’s Beach, where coastal conditions and erosion have created ongoing safety and maintenance concerns.
The proposed projects will move portions of the path away from vulnerable areas while also improving the surrounding landscape, including removing invasive ice plant and restoring native vegetation.
Near Lighthouse Field and It’s Beach, frequent wave overtopping has impacted the viewing area that is currently closed behind concrete barriers. The project will permanently close that small section, remove the concrete blocks, install new fencing consistent with the surrounding area, relocate benches, and restore the landscaping. Only minor pedestrian detours are expected during construction.
Near Getchell Street, erosion has brought the bluff edge to within five feet of the existing path in some areas. The project will move the path farther inland to create greater separation from the bluff edge. The new alignment will require the removal of eight parking spaces. The design was developed in coordination with California Coastal Commission staff.
Construction at Getchell is expected to take approximately two months and will require a temporary westbound traffic detour using Fair Avenue, Wanzer Street and Swift Street.
The projects are scheduled to go before the Planning Commission on August 20 for consideration of a Local Coastal Permit, followed by the City Council on August 25 for approval and authorization to move forward with bidding.
These improvements are part of the City's ongoing work to maintain safe public access along West Cliff while adapting infrastructure to changing coastal conditions.
