Welcome September!
This newsletter is a little lighter than usual for two reasons. First, Council was on break from mid-July to mid-August. Second, I am taking to heart the advice of one of our city liaisons to practice what they call “smart brevity.” That means getting to the heart of the matter and sharing what is most essential. In doing so, I also want to keep us rooted in what matters most: ethics, values, and accountability. Those guideposts are what keep us strong as a community, and they are the lens through which I approach this work.
Summer in Santa Clara always seems to go by too quickly, but it leaves us with wonderful memories. Our Fourth of July Celebration, our Summer Cinema's, Music in the Park concerts and Street Dance all filled the night with music, fireworks, and community pride. As we head into fall, we have one more big summer highlight on the horizon: the Annual Art and Wine Festival on Sept.13 and 14 at Central Park. With over 160 artists, delicious food, wine, and live music, it is one of the best traditions of our city. I hope to see you there. Learn more about the Festival online.
Big news for movie lovers: Alamo Drafthouse has officially opened at Valley Fair. If you have not been yet, it is not your average movie theater. You can order dinner and dessert right from your seat so you never miss a single plot twist. Cocktails and candy are delivered and theme parties are frequent. This feels like the grown up version of my teenage dream! Learn more online.
Between Council meetings, school, city events, the regular nine to five, and raising two teens, I often need a place to stretch out the stress and break a good sweat. That is when I head over to YogaSix Santa Clara. It is where I can unwind, move, and reset all at once. I am still a novice in their hot yoga class, but it has quickly become one of my favorite little sanctuaries in the neighborhood. The classes feel like community and the instructors are fantastic. If you are looking for a reset, check out one of their class packages at a discount rate and see for yourself. Ask for Shirley! Learn more online.
We have two important events coming up. First is the Korean Festival on Sept. 20 at Central Park, a lively celebration of Korean culture, food, and music. If you have never had Korean street food, trust me, you are in for a treat. Visit kfestsv.com for more information.
Then on Sept. 24, join me for the State of the City at the Mission City Center for the Performing Arts. This event is an opportunity to reflect on our progress, speak honestly about the challenges, and share where we are headed. Mayor Gillmor will deliver the State of the City address, and we will also present community awards. Light refreshments will be served. Visit the State of the City webpage for more information.
I can hardly believe that just one year ago the campaign was in full swing. I was knocking on doors, attending backyard meetups, and meeting neighbors who were generous enough to share their hopes and sometimes their porch snacks with me. That experience was a gift, and over the past year I have learned so much more about the complexities of our city and the very interesting time we are in. I have had the chance to sit down over coffee and connect with so many active and inspiring citizens, and every one of those conversations has grounded me in the work ahead.
As we look toward 2026, we need to stay rooted in ethics and values and hold ourselves and one another to the highest standards of accountability. I remain grateful to be serving as your Council member and I commit to keep showing up with authenticity, humility, and a little gritty humor as we continue to move Santa Clara forward together.
