It's Summer Solstice! Now Water Smarter...

Today marks summer's official start with the longest day of the year. As weather heats, maximize water in your garden.
- Set irrigation overhead spray programs to water between 6 p.m. and 9 a.m. (a permanent policy in Santa Clara)
- For drip irrigation, run programs for longer (40-60 minutes) as less often (once per week; twice for newly installed gardens) to ensure water gets to the root zone, not just the soil surface. Drip irrigation and hand watering are both permitted throughout the day, but early morning watering is best.
- MULCH! Wood chips and similar organic mulches protect soil from hot sun and help reduce evaporation.
- Watering lawn? Program to cycle and soak early in the morning for less runoff and more absorption to your lawn's roots. Set mower blades higher; longer lawns need less water and stay greener since taller grass blades shade the roots.
- Better yet, ditch your lawn altogether with the Landscape Conversion Rebate. Receive up to $5,000 to help convert to vibrant, water-wise garden.
Most importantly, bask in your garden's afternoon breezes and lingering sun today! Dine al fresco, sip some liquid sunshine lemonade and enjoy the entertainment that nature provides. Happy Solstice!
