Office of Traffic Safety Awards $69,050 Grant to the City of Santa Clara for Safe Routes to School Program
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The City of Santa Clara announced today that it has received a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to support its Safe Routes to School Program. The program will promote safe practices for children walking and biking and integrates health, fitness, traffic relief, and environmental awareness. The grant program runs through September 2025.
"We are thrilled to have been awarded this grant, which will play a key role in maintaining our Safe Routes to School program,” said City Manager Jovan Grogan. “We are committed to enhancing safety for all.”
Grant funds will support various activities focused on bicycle and pedestrian safety:
- Bicycle training courses and student assemblies to educate youth on safe riding and walking behaviors.
- Helmet fitting inspections and distribution of helmets, along with free safety equipment such as bicycle headlights/taillights, during youth safety trainings at schools participating within our Safe Routes to School Program.
“The safety of people walking and biking on our roads is a top priority for our office,” OTS Director Barbara Rooney said. “Everyone moves, and not always by car. It’s important that we invest in efforts to protect people walking, biking and rolling that helps establish a strong traffic safety culture where everyone on California roads can travel to and from places safely.”
