Coastal Cleanup Day: Saturday, Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon is California Coastal Cleanup Day! Volunteers throughout California will work together to help protect our oceans, watersheds, and wildlife from trash and debris. During last year’s event, over 600 pounds of trash was collected in Santa Clara. The City will be hosting a cleanup site. Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz at Everett N. Eddie Souza Park: Join us on Sept. 28, from 9:30 a.m. to noon for the “Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz” – an event where community members take photos of the wildlife in Everett N. Eddie Souza Park. These photos will be collected and used to inform educational programs about our biodiversity. Your participation in this event will help us understand how to protect pollinators and other important wildlife in our community. Santa Clara Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Fall 2024 Classes: Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) teaches residents how to be self-sufficient after a major disaster by developing a core of citizen responders trained in basic emergency skills. The 21-hour academy includes classroom and hands-on training on topics such as earthquake awareness, utilities shut-off, fire extinguisher use, disaster medicine, triage, assessment of minor injuries and burns, and light search and rescue techniques. The next CERT academy begins on Oct. 28 and is open for registration at SantaClaraCA.gov.
Learn How to Identify and Report Scams: Have you or someone you know been a victim of a scam? Join the Santa Clara Senior Center and the Santa Clara Police Department in an interactive workshop on how to identify scams on Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 9 - 10 am. During this in-person, fraud seminar presented by the Santa Clara Police Department, individuals will learn how to identify and report scams to the appropriate authorities and be given resources to help minimize the impact of falling victim to a scam. Bean Bag Toss Tournament: The Senior Center is excited to be hosting a Bean Bag Toss Tournament for adults ages 50+ (aka Cornhole) for adults ages 50+ on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. All levels are welcome. 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s (In Mandarin): The Senior Center will host an informative meeting on the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's on Sept. 26 at 10 a.m. Alzheimer's disease and other dementias cause changes in memory, thinking and behavior that affect daily life. Join us to learn about 10 common warning signs and signs to look out for in yourself or others. This hour-long talk covers typical age-related changes, warning signs of Alzheimer's disease, how to talk to others about memory concerns, early detection, the benefits of getting a diagnosis and the diagnostic process, and Alzheimer's Association resources.
