UPDATE – Stabbing Suspect Identified and Arrested in Sacramento
On July 4, 2023, detectives from the Sacramento Police Department’s East and Central Command Violent Crime Reduction Team and the Santa Clara Police Department (SCPD) arrested suspect Alejandro Garcia-Villanueva at his residence.
With the advanced video technology at Levi's Stadium and vital community input, swift action by the SCPD allowed detectives to positively identify both the suspect and the person of interest within 24 hours of the incident. Detectives determined the person of interest did not commit a criminal offense and released her at the scene. SCPD detectives authored an arrest warrant for suspect Garcia-Villanueva for attempted murder. A judge from the Santa Clara County Superior Court authorized an arrest and a search warrant for suspect Garcia-Villanueva at his residence.
At 7:30 p.m., Sacramento Police Department detectives contacted suspect Garcia-Villanueva on the 3300 block of 22nd Avenue in Sacramento. Suspect Garcia-Villanueva surrendered and was placed under arrest without incident. The detectives also contacted the person of interest with suspect Garcia-Villanueva. SCPD detectives served a search warrant of suspect Garcia-Villanueva’s residence and located evidence.
SCPD detectives took custody of suspect Garcia-Villanueva and booked him into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for further criminal proceedings.

POLICE ACTIVITY – Stabbing at Levi’s Stadium – Police seek public assistance.
On July 2, 2023, at 8:47 p.m. a stabbing occurred at Levi’s Stadium during the CONCACAF Gold Cup soccer event.
Towards the end of the event, Santa Clara Police Department (SCPD) officers responded to an active fight inside the stadium. Upon arrival, SCPD officers located a male victim with a visible wound on his upper collar bone area. Public safety personnel provided medical assistance and transported the victim by ambulance to a local hospital for a critical injury.
Based upon witness statements and video footage, SCPD detectives discovered the victim was stabbed near the upper collar bone area with a knife during an altercation with the suspect. The suspect fled from the scene.
With this information, detectives identified a suspect and a person of interest involved in the stabbing.
The suspect is described as: a Hispanic, male adult, between 25 – 35 years old, with short dark-colored hair, a thin mustache and a thin beard. He was last seen wearing a green-colored Mexican national team soccer jersey.
The suspect was with a Hispanic, female adult with dark-colored hair and a similar Mexican national team soccer jersey. At this time, the female is a person of interest.
SCPD is seeking the public’s assistance with this investigation. If you recognize the suspect or the person of interest, please do not attempt to apprehend them.
