National Poetry Month, a celebration of poetry which takes place each April, was introduced in 1996 and is organized by the Academy of American Poets as a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States. The Santa Clara City Library is celebrating this year with a ton of great events, including an open mic night for ages 17+, a Youth Poet Laureate finalist showcase in collaboration with the Santa Clara County Youth Poet Laureate Program, and a youth poetry contest. Also be sure to check our Instagram stories and Facebook page throughout the month of April for daily poetry prompts!

In this virtual youth-led, communal workshop, we will explore topics of space, distance, and how to slow down and hold what is around us in a world of social media and classes that often feels like it is moving very quickly, passing by before we have a chance to rest, to see. During this workshop, we will free write, discuss, and respond to prompts using writing as a reprieve, a way to refocus our lives. We invite you to join us and explore how writing can ground us, calm us, excite us, and help us reconnect with ourselves. Recommended for Grades 4-12.
