FEMA Releases Preliminary Flood Maps for Santa Rosa Creek Watershed
Preliminary flood maps for the Santa Rosa Creek Watershed have been released by FEMA, identifying new Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs), or high-risk flood zones. Properties in these areas may be subject to flood insurance requirements and stricter building regulations. Developed by FEMA using the latest hydrologic and hydraulic data, the maps are part of a nationwide effort to improve flood risk awareness and support community resilience. A 90-day public appeal and comment period is expected to begin in winter 2025-26, allowing property owners to formally challenge flood zone designations using technical data. A virtual community meeting, hosted by FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program, in coordination with the City and County, will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, to share information and answer questions about the changes and requirements.

Sidewalk and Street Tree Care Starts with You
A clean, safe, and walkable neighborhood benefits everyone—and it starts right outside your front door. In Santa Rosa, property owners are responsible for maintaining the sidewalks and street trees next to their homes or businesses. This includes weeding, sweeping, and trimming any plants or tree limbs that obstruct the sidewalk, signage, or street. Overgrown branches and vegetation can create safety and visibility issues, so regular upkeep helps everyone move more safely and comfortably through the neighborhood.
