Let’s Talk Vegetation as We Recognize Wildfire Awareness Month
May is Wildfire Awareness Month, a time to focus on preventing and preparing for wildfires. It’s also when the rains have typically started to taper off and maintenance of vegetation, seasonal grasses, and weeds on City-owned properties moves into full swing. With late spring rains this year, those weeds and grasses are growing rapidly and, in some cases, regrowing after crews have cut them back. Crews are working methodically to address vegetation growth throughout the city, including on over 1,100 acres of parklands, open space, civic space, and roadside landscaping. Residents are also encouraged to maintain weeds and dry grasses on their properties where applicable throughout spring and to be prepared to meet the requirements of the City’s Weed Abatement Ordinance, which requires weeds and seasonal grasses to be maintained during Santa Rosa’s declared fire season, typically June to November.
