Get Thanksgiving Cooking Safety and Grease Disposal Tips from Santa Rosa Fire and Water Departments
As we prepare for a fun and safe Thanksgiving holiday, the Santa Rosa Fire Department (SRFD) and Santa Rosa Water (SRW) have some friendly kitchen reminders to ensure your holiday goes smoothly.
Cooking Safety:
While cooking stovetop, stay in the kitchen to keep an eye on the food.
Make sure someone is always in the house while the turkey is in the oven.
Children should stay at least three feet away from the stove while it’s hot.
Fats, Oils, and Grease Disposal:
Never pour fats, oils, and grease (FOG) down the drain – this can lead to clogged pipes and nasty sewer backups.
If possible, wipe FOG from pans with paper towels and place in your curbside compost bin.
If there’s too much to wipe but less than 2 cups of FOG, pour it into sealable containers, let them cool, and dispose of them in the trash. For more than 2 cups, visit zerowastesonoma.gov for proper disposal.
