City Council Approves Negotiations to Acquire the Southeast Greenway
After 14 years of committed community partnerships, the City is poised to negotiate the acquisition of 49 acres of Caltrans’ 58 acres of undeveloped land which was previously intended to be an extension of Highway 12. The Caltrans property follows a 1.9-mile linear path from Farmers Lane/Highway 12 to Spring Lake Regional Park. The City Council has agreed to the conditions of purchase; however, the appraisal still needs to be approved by Caltrans and, ultimately, the California Transportation Commission (CTC). The City will also need to negotiate an easement agreement with Ag and Open Space over the property, a requirement to receive the matching grant funds for the acquisition. The CTC is the final step for approval of the sale, and the City is hopeful for a January meeting date. READ MORE

New HAWK Beacon Crosswalk at Piner High School
Just in time for students returning back to school, the City of Santa Rosa, as part of the Fulton Road Widening Improvements project, is installing a HAWK beacon crosswalk on Fulton Road between Piner High School and Youth Community Park. A HAWK beacon is a traffic control device that stops road traffic and allows pedestrians to cross the street. It is officially known as a High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk beacon and is typically installed at mid-block crossings or intersections. A HAWK beacon provides protected pedestrian crossings by stopping vehicle traffic only when activated by a pedestrian. The crosswalk signal remains dark until activated by a pedestrian, triggering the warning alternating flashing yellow lights, then solid yellow to inform drivers to prepare to stop. Once the solid red-light changes to alternating flashing red lights, a vehicle may proceed after stopping once the crosswalk is clear. This is the third HAWK beacon crossing installed within the city limits. READ MORE
