Shark’s Teeth on the Street Support Pedestrian Safety
Shark’s Teeth pavement markings are found at mid-block and un-signalized crosswalks to indicate the point behind which vehicles and bicyclists must yield to crossing pedestrians. Similar to the solid line at a stop sign, drivers must stop behind the shark’s teeth when a pedestrian is in the crosswalk. These yield markings consist of a row of solid white triangles pointing toward approaching vehicles and extending across the approach lane. The distance between the shark’s teeth and the crosswalk provides a safe comfort zone or buffer for pedestrians when crossing. Shark’s teeth also help to prevent multiple threat collisions where a vehicle may block the view of a pedestrian for drivers in adjacent lanes as they approach the crosswalk. PEDESTRIAN RESOURCES
