A Magical Mixture

Hello Creek Stewards!

I visited Flat Rock Park today to plan our activities for Saturday, October 12th.  There certainly is trash to pick up.  Brush Creek is not flowing in these last days of the dry season and it will be fun to move upstream in the creek bottom, hopping rocks around the small pools of water.  We can access every part of the creek right now, allowing us to remove trash before it mobilizes and floats out of reach in the first storms.  In addition to trash, we may do some vegetation management, removing invasive ivy from trees.  Another option will be to run around like squirrels and collect native plant seeds to grow in the nursery and plant on various restoration sites.

It's the quiet season before planting or weed abatement begins in earnest, but that doesn't mean there isn't important work to do.  It struck me during my visit that I need Flat Rock Park more than it needs me right now.  People have likely visited this site for thousands of years.  Exploring this magical confluence of two beautiful creeks is part of our cultural heritage.  It tells a story about who we are, how we live and what we value.  I hope you will join us on Saturday (October 12).  Sure, we will keep busy with tasks but I believe the most important part of the day is just being there.
