County of San Diego Best Practices During Extreme Heat
According to County Public Health guidance, extreme heat can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. To help prevent heat‑related illness, please share the following recommendations with your networks:
-
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
-
Take breaks and seek out air‑conditioned or shaded spaces and avoid being outdoors during the hottest parts of the day (10:00am - 4:00pm).
-
Wear light, loose‑fitting clothing and take cool showers or use damp cloths to lower body temperature.
-
Check on vulnerable individuals, including older adults, young children, outdoor workers, people with chronic conditions, and those without access to cooled environments.
-
Know the signs of heat illness, such as dizziness, nausea, confusion, or excessive sweating, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
- Do not overexert yourself and know your limits.
The County operates designated Cool Zones (Free, Air‑Conditioned Locations) to provide residents relief from high temperatures. These sites include libraries, community centers, and other indoor public facilities across the region.
- Cool Zones are free, air‑conditioned, and open during their regular hours.
- Residents may download the Cool Zone Site List or use the interactive map to find locations by city, ZIP code, or pet policy.
- People who need assistance locating a site can call at 1-800-339-4661 from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Mon-Fri or email coolzones@sdcounty.ca.gov.
- Please encourage community members – especially older adults, those with health challenges, and individuals without home cooling – to take advantage of these resources.
