You’re Invited to a Family-Friendly Budget Open House
A kid-friendly open house is taking place from 5:00 PM - 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 22nd at the County Operations Center in Kearny Mesa. Children can meet some adoptable animals, see the Sheriff’s cat, and view other emergency vehicles up close.
Grown-ups can learn about the County's recommended budget taking effect on July 1st, and how it may affect them and their community. Staff will be available to answer any questions that participants may have. Please click here if you would like to leave budget comments online from now until 5:00 PM on June 12th.
If you are unable to attend this Open House, there is the option to attend a virtual community meeting scheduled for 5:30 PM on Wednesday, May 28th.

County Names New Public Health Officer
Dr. Sayone Thihalolipavan has been named as the County of San Diego’s new Public Health Officer. Dr. Thihalolipavan most recently served as Public Health Medical Officer within the County’s Medical Care Services Department.

Enrollment ending soon for UCSD MIHA Program
Join the MIHA Program—a free, 24-week UC San Diego study for mothers and adult daughters focused on nutrition, fitness, and healthy habits. Starts Thursday, May 29, with weekly in-person sessions at UCSD La Jolla, Thursdays between 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

NEW! 2025 Request for Proposals — Latina Giving Circle - The Latina Giving Circle empowers Latinas and allies in the San Diego community and beyond to unite and amplify impact by pooling their resources to support the causes that are most important to them. Their grants support vital programs that address critical needs and create a more equitable San Diego. Applications are due June 15, 2025.

Maryann Jackson Memorial Scholarship - This scholarship offers 5 winners a $100 gift card for dorm essentials. Applicants must be African American, a U.S. citizen, have attended a California Community College, and be enrolled at a Historically Black College/University for Fall 2025. Applications are due July 13, 2025.
- UC San Diego Black Alumni Scholarship Fund - This scholarship offers eligible students a four-year $10,000 scholarship, renewable at $2,500 annually. It provides financial, academic, and personal support to over 200 students currently attending UCSD. Applications are due November 30, 2025.

Humanities for All Quick Grants - This program responds to the needs and interests of Californians and encourages greater public participation in humanities programming, particularly by new and/or underserved audiences. Applications are open year-round.

Greenhouse Gas Reduction Loan Program - Funds available for new or expanded organics and recycling facilities, including composting, anaerobic digestion, and waste-to-product manufacturing. Applications are open year-round.

Brightlife Kids Mental Health Resources for Parents
May is Mental Health Awareness Month—take a moment to check-in on your child's well-being. Brightlife Kids offers free, confidential one-on-one support for caregivers and kids up to the age of 12 years old. Just an email and a California zip code are needed to sign up.
