July 10, 2018 - BOOST Your Workout
with Cross-Training!
Today is another BOOST day! Do your best to add about a .5
mile (+1100 steps) to your training today or, if you need to, build up to the
full 2.0 miles (+4400 steps) over the next few days. One way to help increase your fitness level is
to use cross-training.
Cross-training involves doing another activity (not running) that will help improve your running performance, while minimizing the impact to your body. It is a good way to add variation into your workout and give you a break from your everyday routine. Examples of good cross training exercises include: swimming, biking, calisthenics, and weight training (upper and lower body including core).
Mission Bay Park’s De Anza Cove has a fitness trail of exercise stations with posted instructions to assist new users with navigating the equipment. Exercises include log hops, leg lifts, incline push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups.
Morley Field Sports Complex offers a Parcourse Fitness Circuit that includes eighteen exercise stations spaced out over a 2.5 mile path.
Embarcadero Marina Park South offers park-goers with seven exercise equipment stations with tips along a quarter mile loop. Each of the stations is less than 200 feet from each other which allows you to create your own circuit that incorporate both aerobic and strength exercises.
Get your power-walk on at Lindo Lake County Park and discover 17 physical fitness stations that offer a scenic, no-cost workout on the westernmost peninsula’s south shore.
Live Oak Park in Fallbrook offers chin up bar, push up bars and an abs bench.
A good cross training exercise to incorporate into your exercise playlist is a squat, considered an essential exercise for developing strength and power. To make sure you are performing squats correctly, watch this tutorial from San Diego State University’s Aztec Recreation Center.
