5K Fitness Challenge #14: Beat the Summer Heat!

day 14

July 14, 2017 - Beat the Summer Heat!

Summertime means BBQ’s, beach days, picnics and spending time outside. Relaxing by the pool or lake, playing in the sprinklers or enjoying our local bays and beaches are great ways to unwind and cool off.

While you’re out and about it is also important to stay safe in the sun. The American Cancer Society recommends shielding your skin with clothing, broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher and staying in the shade to help lower your risk.

If you’re headed to the beach, the City of Solana Beach offers an informative list of beach and ocean safety tips about rip currents, high surf, stingrays and jellyfish so you can stay safe and have fun all day long. Find the beach water quality status for San Diego beaches 365 days a year with the County of San Diego’s Beach Water Quality App.

In order to beat the summer heat and prevent dehydration during your exercise, follow these 4 Summer Safety Tips:

  1. Do activities during the coolest parts of the day.
  2. Drink extra water before, during and after exercise.
  3. Take breaks and rest if you get dizzy or lightheaded, or if you feel very tired.
  4. Wear clothes that help cool the body.

To help keep you cool, Goodwill of San Diego County suggests this DIY No-Sew Cut Out Tank Top Project:
