5K Fitness Challenge #9: REST - Take the Day Off!

9 rest

July 9, 2017 - REST - Take the Day Off!

That’s right, take the day off and relax.  You’ll have more energy and patience after taking a moment to calm down.

Kaiser Permanente offers 3 simple ways to relieve stress:

  1. Deep Breathing - Focusing your awareness on breathing is an excellent way to settle your mind and relax. Adults, especially when they’re stressed, breathe shallowly and rapidly from their chests. When you’re mindful and keep your focus on your breathing, you can help yourself relax. Just 5 minutes can help improve your mood!
  2. Progressive Muscle Relaxation - If you’re like most people, you probably carry stress in your muscles. After a while, these tense muscles may start to feel normal. Progressive muscle relaxation helps you learn the dierence between how it feels when your muscles are tense and when they’re relaxed.
  3. Guided Imagery and Mindfulness Meditation - Your imagination can be a very powerful resource in relieving stress and pain. Unwind with guided imagery podcasts or learn how to meditate.

Perhaps today is a good day to meditate on ways that you can help the greater good! Many volunteer projects offer opportunities to keep you active and get you moving:

HandsOn San Diego invites you to help Jewish Family Service of San Diego with their Food Pantry Project or come join the kitchen crew at Father Joes Villages to help prepare and serve meals to the men, women, and children that live on the streets of San Diego:
