5K Fitness Challenge #17: Increase All Types of Physical Activity!

day 17

July 17, 2017 - Increase All Types of Physical Activity!

Physical activity can be anything that gets you moving each day, like gardening, playing with your kids, walking the dog, taking the stairs, doing housework or running errands. Walking is the easiest way for people to meet general physical activity guidelines as most can access a safe walking area such as parks, shopping malls, sports tracks, beaches or even their neighborhood.

Feeling fit and healthy means being able to take part in recreational and physical activities that you enjoy.  Staying active and continuing to exercise is vital.

The Braille Institute offers these tips for staying active – no matter your level of sight:

  • Keep on walking. Many adults can achieve recommended amounts of physical activity mainly by walking – which has the added advantages of being a low-impact, weight-bearing activity; can be done practically anywhere and takes no special equipment except for a sturdy pair of walking shoes.
  • Join a gym. Many health clubs and gyms offer special classes for people of all fitness levels and capabilities.
  • Take your pick of sports. Team activities are a great way to have fun while building relationships with your teammates.

With our reliance on screens for work and recreation, it can be hard to fit in physical activity. Personal trainer Caroline Smith with the American Cancer Society explains how staying active can help your health, and she shares some tips to fit in movement during the day:
