Smoking and tobacco use can cause your blood pressure to
temporarily increase and can contribute to damaged arteries through an increased
risk of atherosclerosis (buildup of fatty substances in the arteries),
which can make high blood pressure worse.
Stroke
risks are also higher because smoking not only increases blood pressure but
also increases cholesterol build-up and the tendency for blood to clot.
If you don’t smoke, don’t start…and avoid second-hand smoke.
Secondhand smoke is a serious health hazard for nonsmokers, especially
children. Nonsmokers who have high blood pressure or high blood cholesterol
have an even greater risk of developing heart diseases when they’re exposed to
secondhand smoke.
If you do smoke, talk with your doctor about ways to quit,
so you can be good to your heart.
