Help Keep our High Desert Clean at These 2023 Community Events

Illegal dumping is a widespread problem throughout the High Desert. If you need to dispose of bulky items such as mattresses, furniture, tires and appliances, there are dozens of events planned throughout the First District.

Aside from these designated community cleanups, there are several ways to dispose of large items and hazardous waste year-round. Let’s all do our part to keep our beautiful desert clean!

Additional Resources

  • Hesperia residents (no businesses) may dispose of electronic waste year-round for free at the Hesperia Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility located at 17443 Lemon Street, Hesperia. The HHW Facility is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
  • Victor Valley residents can dump a variety of items for FREE at the Recycle Alley Recycling Drop-off Center at the Victor Valley MRF.  Accepted items include old TVs, computers, appliances, mattresses, box springs, scrap metal, mixed paper, plastic, glass bottles and jars, cardboard and newspaper. Recycle Alley is open to the public throughout the year, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
  • Businesses with e-waste may contact San Bernardino County at 909-382-5401 to schedule an appointment for proper disposal. Fees apply.
  • For more information on Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers, please contact the County of San Bernardino Fire Department at (800) 645-9228.
  • Burrtec Waste provides four residential curbside large or bulky item collections (maximum of five items per collection) during a 12-month period at no extra charge. Items include scrap metal, wood, old appliances, furniture, televisions, computer monitors, refrigerator or freezer, tree branches, mattresses, 2 tires, etc. Call (760) 245-8607 for more information.
  • CR&R offers residential customers a “bulky-item” pick-up without charge. Call your Customer Service department to schedule a pick-up. You will need to provide a description of the material to be collected. If you have more than a few items, they offer “clean-up dumpsters” for rent.

Disabled American Veterans Chapter 92 is hosting a Stand Down Veterans Affairs Claims Assistance and Community Outreach event at Hesperia Elks Lodge on Feb. 25. 

  • For all Veterans in need of claims assistance with submitting VA Claims, please bring a copy of your DD-214 , drivers license or legal ID, and all related medical documents. E-Benefits log in and password is helpful but not needed.
  • Service Officers will be available for claims assistance from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Applications for Hesperia's Military Banner Program are now open. Residents are invited to recognize and celebrate an active-duty service member with a personalized banner to be displayed at Hesperia Civic Plaza Park.

'Lady Be Aware' Classes Continue at Sheriff's Training Center in Devore

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is offering its next "Lady Be Aware" training sessions on Feb. 18, March 18, April 15, May 20 and June 17.

This single-day, 8-hour course covers all types of safety — including cyber safety, home safety, situational awareness, and physical safety. Participants also get hands-on self-defense training, including the opportunity to shoot three different types of firearms.

Hours are 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The class takes place at the Sheriff's Department Training Center, located at 19801 Institution Road, Devore. Wear comfortable clothing and no flip flops or shorts. Participants must provide a drivers' license to enroll, and once registered, payment is due to hold your seat. Cost is $75 per person.

Cal Fire Seeks Public Comment for SRA Fire Hazard Severity Zones

Cal Fire's new fire hazard maps may affect the cost and availability of your insurance — and where you can build on private property.

The hazard maps are being updated to more accurately reflect the zones in
California that are susceptible to wildfire. 

Search for your address to check if it is in a fire hazard severity zone. Several areas of Wrightwood, Phelan, Pinon Hills, Hesperia and Apple Valley may be affected.

Family Assistance Program Hosting Groundbreaking for Tiny Home Village

The Family Assistance Program invites the community to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for its Tiny Home Village & Youth Drop-In Center Expansion at 10 a.m. March 10.

The new center will include 14 tiny homes — complete with a commercial kitchen, bathroom & shower facilities, computer lab, recreation room and 24/7 supportive services for homeless youth ages 18-24.

“I am excited that the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians has recognized the need for youth specific services and is supporting this innovative project," said said Darryl Evey, the executive director of Family Assistance Program. "If we do not end youth homelessness, we will not stop the pipeline of people who have had their childhoods destroyed by housing insecurity. This project will set these young people up for a lifetime of successes."

Several Scholarships Now Available to High Desert Students

Mountain Desert Career Pathways is accepting applications for its Oro Grande Foundation CTE Scholarship. Nine $4,000 scholarships will be awarded to current graduating seniors in participating districts who have completed a CTE pathway. 'California Days' Celebration Coming to Calico Ghost Town on Feb. 18-19

Recognizing the role Calico Ghost Town and its settlers played in the history of California and its economy, the San Bernardino County Regional Parks department will host California Days on Feb. 18-19. The event coincides with National California Day celebrated every year on February 22.

Visitors are invited to learn about the history of early California through educational displays focusing on mining, the Pony Express, the state flag and the Butterfield Overland Trail.

Arthopolooza: The Ultimate Bugfest Coming to Victor Valley Museum

Victor Valley Museum invites the community to celebrate all things creepy and crawly during “Arthropolooza: The Ultimate Bugfest” on Saturday, March 4. Held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event will be filled with festivities that highlight arthropods. General admission is $10 (adult), $8 (military or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (child ages 6 to 12). Death Valley National Park Hosting Annual Dark Sky Festival This Weekend

Looking for something fun and unusual to do this weekend? Why not check out the Death Valley Dark Sky Festival, happening this Friday through Sunday. The International Dark-Sky Association has designated Death Valley National Park a Gold Tier Dark Sky Park, which is the highest rating of darkness.

This popular event includes dozens of activities, including auditorium talks, an exploration fair, astrophotography meetups, astronomy programs, hands-on family events, and much more.

Most events will take place at or near the Furnace Creek Visitor Center. Camping and lodging options are available.

The Dark Sky Festival is a collaboration between Death Valley National Park, Death Valley Natural History Association, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Ames Research Center, SETI Institute and California Institute of Technology.

Support Forever Wild Animal Sanctuary at Valentine's Day Event on Saturday

Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary in Phelan is hosting a Valentine's Day event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 11. Admission is $8 per person, with the option for $5 barn feeds, a $5 feast with the beasts, and $10 extreme feeds.

The sanctuary is home to several exotic animals including Siberian/Bengal tigers, African lions, mountain lions, leopards, grizzly bears, black bears, raccoons, and more.
