Observe this Celestial Phenomenon with Local Astronomy Group
REDLANDS, CA — Space lovers are in for a treat this weekend. A total lunar eclipse, or “blood moon,” will occur Sunday, May 15, 2022 at the San Bernardino County Museum from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will sure be a sight to see! This special edition is part of the Museum’s Cosmic Nights series in partnership with the San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomers (SBVAA).
Lunar eclipses have been a favorite event for sky watchers for countless years. They occur when Earth's shadow blocks the sun's light, which otherwise reflects off the moon. There are three types of lunar eclipses — total, partial and penumbral — with the most dramatic being a total lunar eclipse, in which Earth's shadow completely covers the moon. During a total lunar eclipse, the moon will appear bright red in the night sky.
Cosmic Nights at the San Bernardino County Museum are in partnership with San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomers (SBVAA). Organized in 1958, SBVAA helps amateur astronomers in the San Bernardino Valley area to increase their knowledge and excitement in astronomy and spread that knowledge to the community.
The event take place outdoors, weather permitting, and guests are advised to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Museum galleries will be open during this event. Admission to this special event is $10 (adult), $8 (military or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (child ages 5 to 12), Museums for All program (EBT) cardholders are $1 up to nine (9) people. Children under five are free. Tickets are available in advance online, or may be purchased at the door. The museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. Parking is free.
The San Bernardino County Museum’s exhibits of regional, cultural and natural history and the Museum’s other exciting events and programs reflect the effort by the Board of Supervisors to achieve the Countywide Vision by celebrating arts, culture, and education in the county, creating quality of life for residents and visitors.
