Supervisor Karen Spiegel

Dear Friends and Second District Residents,

As we prepare to cast our ballots in the upcoming election, let us remember that voting is not only our right but also a cherished civic duty. It is a powerful way to shape the future of our community and ensure that each voice is heard. This is our opportunity to contribute to the democratic process that binds us together, and with the election just days away, I urge every eligible resident to take part. You can find convenient ballot drop-off locations at the following link: https://voteinfo.net/november-5-2024-election. Let’s exercise our right to vote and make a meaningful impact on the future of Riverside County.

As we step into November, we enter a time of reflection, gratitude, and community. This month, we honor diverse cultures, celebrate service, and promote health and wellness in Riverside County through various observances and events. Each of these days and weeks carries significance, not just as dates on the calendar, but as moments to recognize our shared values and the dedicated work of our county departments that touch the lives of so many in our community.

We begin with Día de los Muertos on November 1 and 2, a cultural celebration that honors the memory of loved ones who have passed. It’s a time to reflect on our county's rich cultural diversity and the importance of embracing our cultural heritage. For information on Dia de los Muertos events happening in the Second District, please visit the events page on my website at https://rivcodistrict2.org/events or see the flyers below.

Kristallnacht, remembered on November 9-10, serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers of hate and intolerance, urging us to remain vigilant in combating all forms of discrimination. In recognition of this somber night, I invite you to join us at Congregation Beth Shalom's Annual Kristallnacht Commemoration Program, "Keeping the Stories Alive: Reflections" featuring Holocaust survivor Yetta Kane, on Thursday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the Corona Public Library (650 S. Main St., Corona). For more information, visit https://rivcodistrict2.org/events/congregation-beth-shaloms-annual-kristallnacht-commemoration-program.

As part of my commitment to fostering a compassionate and supportive community, I am thrilled to spotlight World Kindness Day on November 13. In the spirit of this day, I invite you to join us at the World Kindness Carnival, an inspiring event hosted by the nonprofit organization Simple Acts of Care and Kindness (S.A.C.K.) on November 10 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Eastvale Community Park (12750 Citrus St., Eastvale). Since 1999, S.A.C.K. has championed anti-bullying initiatives for children, and this year, they’re bringing kindness to the forefront with an event designed for families to experience the joy and impact of simple, caring actions. Additionally, students K-12 can participate in a scholarship writing contest, sharing an act of kindness that has impacted their lives for a chance to win part of the $3,000 in scholarships available. You can find tickets and more information at https://rivcodistrict2.org/events/world-kindness-carnival.

On Veterans Day, November 11, we express our deepest gratitude to the brave men and women who have served our country. With a large veteran population, Riverside County is committed to providing essential services through our Veterans Services Office. We work to ensure veterans and their families receive the support and recognition they deserve, from healthcare assistance to employment opportunities.

In recognition of Veterans Day, Riverside County joins the efforts of the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO) in Operation Green Light for Veterans. Join Supervisor Chuck Washington and me at our Operation Green Light for Veterans Ceremony on November 5 at 5:00 p.m. in front of the Riverside County Administration Center (4080 Lemon St., Riverside). Alongside the nation’s 3,069 counties, parishes, and boroughs, Riverside County stands proud in support of our veterans. For more information, see the flyer below or visit https://rivcodistrict2.org/events/2024-operation-green-light-veterans-ceremony.

Military and veteran constituents are invited to join the Corona Chamber of Commerce for the Good Morning Corona: Salute to the Military event on Thursday, November 14, at 1800 Eagle Glen Parkway, Corona. Doors open at 6:30 a.m., and attendees are encouraged to register for tickets by Friday, November 8. Active duty and veteran attendees should note their status in the registration form, as the event is free for them. For more information, visit https://rivcodistrict2.org/events/good-morning-corona-salute-military.

This month also features the David Goldware Friends of the Veterans’ Award, a special recognition for those who support our veteran community. Join us at our Board Meeting on December 3 at 9:30 a.m. at 4080 Lemon St. in Riverside to honor the individual and business selected for this prestigious award. Learn more about David Goldware's Friends of the Veterans Award...

Thanksgiving on November 28 is a time to embrace gratitude and togetherness, reminding us of the importance of supporting one another. This season, consider inviting a neighbor who may be alone or without family nearby, making their holiday brighter with the warmth of community. Across Riverside County, many local Thanksgiving programs offer opportunities to give back, ensuring everyone can celebrate with a whole heart and table. Our county’s Department of Public Social Services is dedicated to providing food assistance and resources to families in need, working tirelessly to support those facing challenging times. To learn more about these food assistance programs, please visit https://rivcodpss.org/calfresh-food-assistance.

I encourage residents to shop locally for Small Business Saturday on November 30. Supporting small businesses is essential for our economy, and our Office of Economic Development is committed to fostering a thriving business community. Small businesses are the backbone of Riverside County, providing jobs, services, and a sense of identity to our neighborhoods. Learn more about how the Office of Economic Development can help your small business thrive at https://rivcoed.org/.Residents can also check with their local chambers at https://rivco.org/chambers-commerce.

As we recognize Diabetes Awareness Month, National Epilepsy Awareness Month, National Family Caregivers Month, National Adoption Awareness Month, National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, and National Hospice Month, we are reminded of the vital services provided by Riverside University Health System and other Riverside County Community health centers. These observances draw attention to health conditions and caregiving challenges that affect many in our community, emphasizing the need for resources, support, and understanding for those impacted. To learn more about the many resources, visit https://www.ruhealth.org/.

Lastly, Native American Heritage Month provides an opportunity to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Native Americans in Riverside County. We honor the enduring legacy and recognize the ongoing efforts to preserve Native American heritage through local programs and partnerships.

These observances are not merely symbolic; they resonate with our community’s daily life. They highlight the services, resources, and support Riverside County departments provide to improve the lives of residents. I encourage you to participate in these observances, learn more about what our county offers, and find ways to contribute to the well-being of our shared home. Together, we continue to build a stronger, more resilient Riverside County.

Thank you for being an integral part of our community.

Warmly,

Spiegel Signature

2024 David Goldware Friend of the Veteran Awards

The Veterans Advisory Committee announced the winners of the 2024 David Goldware Friend of the Veteran Awards. This year’s Individual Award goes to Mrs. Amanda Fisher, a U.S. Marine Corps Gold Star Spouse, Senior District Representative for Senator Kelly Seyarto’s office, and a dedicated board member and volunteer for MilVet Military and Veteran Support Services. Amanda is also a member of Gold Star Spouses of America, Inc. This annual award honors Riverside County residents who demonstrate exceptional patriotism, selflessness, and commitment to veterans' welfare through tireless volunteer work.

The Business Award is presented to MilVet - Military and Veteran Support Services, a non-profit organization that connects veterans, seniors, and families to essential resources through community outreach and programs. This award is given to businesses within Riverside County or those serving its veterans directly in recognition of their outstanding support and promotion of veterans’ causes. The award presentation will occur during the Riverside County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, December 3, at 9:30 a.m. at the County Administration Center, 4080 Lemon St., Riverside.

Riverside County Continues Participation in Operation Green Light for Veterans

Supervisors Karen Spiegel and Chuck Washington invite residents to honor veterans at the Operation Green Light ceremony on November 5 at 5:00 p.m. at the County Administration Center (4080 Lemon St., Riverside). The ceremony will kick off the county’s week-long tribute, lighting the building in green from November 5-11 to symbolize gratitude and support for our veterans. All are welcome to attend this meaningful ceremony as we stand united in recognition of their service and sacrifices.

Alongside the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO), Riverside County joins 3,069 counties, parishes, and boroughs in Operation Green Light to show support for veterans by lighting our buildings green from November 4-11, 2024. Senior Legacy Award SpotlightCaroline Gregory

Caroline Gregory - City of Corona

Every year, the Second District Senior Legacy Awards honors individuals who have made a lasting impact on their communities, celebrating the dedication and passion of those who have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of others. This year, we recognize Caroline Gregory from the City of Corona for her outstanding volunteerism and support to the community.

Caroline Gregory has been a volunteer for the Corona Senior Center since September 2021 and in that time, has created and hosted numerous exercise and nutrition classes and programs for the senior community. Caroline teaches Cardio, Balance & Flexibility, Chair Pilates, and Zumba. You name it, she can teach it!

In her time as a volunteer with the City of Corona, she has amassed over 430 hours of service to her community. As part of her church group, she has been participating in monthly community cleanup events and is helping them adopt Village Loop Park as part of the City’s Adopt a Park program.

Caroline likes to jump in and help whenever she can, including providing hula lessons at the city’s Luau and singing a special song during the Mother’s Day Tea. Caroline Gregory is a true member of the City of Corona Senior Center team who brings people together in the true spirit of community.

Caroline was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes 20 years ago and has struggled with it. She decided she was going to start eating right and exercise to have a healthy mindset. Through exercise and a positive mind, she is living life with full enjoyment. Caroline has a true passion and desire to help the elderly to live a life that keeps them fit and feel good about themselves inside and out.

There is nothing more valuable to Caroline than helping others be happy, confident and strong. Caroline consistently wants to be there for others to help them discover the benefits and joy of training that helped her become the person she is today.

Non-Profit SpotlighJurupa Valley Adopt a Family

Jurupa Valley Adopt a Family

The organization began in 1993 when a group of volunteer and career firefighters from Pedley started providing holiday support to local families through toys and food donations. As the need grew, firefighters from surrounding communities joined forces, leading to the establishment of a community-based 501(c)(3) organization in 2005. By 2009, the program was supporting over 100 families and 150 senior citizens each year. Partnering with the Cal Fire/County of Riverside Fire Department's Spark of Love program, Jurupa Valley Adopt a Family now distributes toys to as many as 7,500 children annually. This growth is a testament to our community's generosity and support.

Jurupa Valley Adopt a Family runs five core programs: Santa Express Parade and Holiday Giving, Youth Development, Senior Assistance, Health and Safety, and Career Assistance. Their mission is to bring opportunity to the community through sustainable skill-building initiatives, with the vision of revitalizing neighborhoods, reducing crime, and breaking down barriers to success.
