Supervisor Karen Spiegel

Dear Friends and Second District Residents,

This September edition of our district newsletter highlights key initiatives impacting everyone in the county and specific developments in our Second District. September is a month with opportunities to celebrate our shared heritage and focus on safety and well-being, showcasing the values and priorities that unite our community. With many important dates, events, and services happening this month, be sure to read through the entire newsletter so you don't miss a thing!

13 Fallen

It has been three years since a tragedy for our communities took place, where thirteen service members were killed in Kabul, Afghanistan. We pledged that fateful day to REMEMBER THEIR NAMES. In October 2021, the US Congressional Gold Medal of Honor was approved with vast bipartisan support.

Two years ago, our grandson hosted his Mitzvah Project, which was held on the eve of the first anniversary of this tragedy. Inspired by chatting with Kareem Nikoui's father, Steve, our grandson worked for months putting together a wonderful event for the community to come together to grieve, pray, and hold to our pledge to NEVER FORGET!

To those thirteen families, we continue to pray for you, and we will continue to honor your sons and daughters, husbands, wives, brothers, and sisters by saying their names:

  • Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Darin T. Hoover, 31, of Salt Lake City, Utah.
  • Marine Corps Sgt. Johnny Rosario Pichardo, 25, of Lawrence, Massachusetts.
  • Marine Corps Sgt. Nicole L. Gee, 23, of Sacramento, California.
  • Marine Corps Cpl. Hunter Lopez, 22, of Indio, California.
  • Marine Corps Cpl. Daegan W. Page, 23, of Omaha, Nebraska.
  • Marine Corps Cpl. Humberto A. Sanchez, 22, of Logansport, Indiana.
  • Marine Corps Lance Cpl. David L. Espinoza, 20, of Rio Bravo, Texas.
  • Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jared M. Schmitz, 20, of St. Charles, Missouri.
  • Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Rylee J. McCollum, 20, of Jackson, Wyoming.
  • Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Dylan R. Merola, 20, of Rancho Cucamonga, California.
  • Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Kareem M. Nikoui, 20, of Norco, California.
  • Navy Hospital man Maxton W. Soviak, 22, of Berlin Heights, Ohio.
  • Army Staff Sgt. Ryan C. Knauss, 23, of Corryton, Tennessee.

May the Almighty always watch over the families of these brave young men and women. They have suffered enough, and we pray for them daily.

On September 2, we celebrate Labor Day, a time to honor the contributions of workers who have built and sustained our nation’s prosperity. Here in Riverside County, we recognize our workforce's hard work and dedication, which drives our local economy and supports our community. While we enjoy the fruits of our labor with a well-deserved day of rest, be sure to look into the various employment services and job training programs our county offers to help residents succeed in their careers. For more information, visit the Riverside County Department of Public Social Services at https://rivcodpss.org/job-training.

On September 11, Patriot Day, we pause to remember and honor the lives lost during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. It is a day of reflection and unity, reminding us of the resilience and strength of our nation in the face of adversity. In Riverside County, we stand together in solidarity with those who continue to feel the impact of that day, and we are committed to supporting our first responders, veterans, and all who serve our community and country. You can find Patriot Day events happening throughout our district listed below in the newsletter or on our events page at https://rivcodistrict2.org/events.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day on September 20 is a solemn occasion to remember and honor those who were prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action. You are not forgotten. Riverside County is home to many veterans, and we are committed to providing support and resources through our Department of Veterans Services to ensure our veterans receive the recognition and care they deserve. For information on how the department can assist you as a veteran, visit https://rivcoveterans.org/.

National Suicide Prevention Week, observed from September 8-14, aims to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. Our county understands that mental health matters and offers numerous services and resources through our Behavioral Health Department to support those in need and promote mental well-being. Visit RUHS Behavioral Health for more details: https://www.rcdmh.org/.

September is National Disaster Preparedness Month, emphasizing the importance of emergency preparedness. Riverside County offers various programs and resources to help residents create disaster preparedness plans, ensuring our community is ready to respond to natural and man-made disasters. The Riverside County Emergency Management Department and the Riverside County Fire Department offer various resources to prepare for disaster. Visit them at https://rivcoready.org/ or https://www.rvcfire.org/services/safety-and-preparedness.

These are just some of the observances recognized throughout this month. I encourage you to participate in this month's various events and observances. Together, we can continue to build a vibrant, supportive, and resilient community.

Warmly,

Spiegel Signature

Remembering Jannlee WatsonJannlee Watson

One of our most involved Temescal Valley community members, Jannlee Watson, was born in San Diego in April 1944. She knew from an early age that she wanted to be a journalist. She loved to write, and reporting the daily news was her noble profession. Jannlee found employment with a chain of weekly newspapers and, over the course of the next 41 years, was employed as the Executive Director of a Chamber of Commerce, served as President of a Soroptimist International Club, volunteered as a reserve police officer, and more.

Jannlee and her husband, John, relocated to Temescal Valley from the Long Beach area, where they purchased their home in 1994.

Jannlee became involved in her Homeowner’s Association, served as president, and attended Temescal Valley Municipal Advisory Council meetings (MAC). In 2014, she created the “We Are Temescal Valley Citizens Group” to strengthen the identity of the beautiful Temescal Valley community. Through a website, a newsletter, and a social media page with 13,000 followers, Jannlee provided a platform of “need to know” information for those who love Temescal Valley as much as she did.

She was also a member of the Temescal Heritage Foundation Board of Directors, which records Temescal history and sponsors the annual community fair. Jannlee also organized the events for the year-long Temescal Valley Bicentennial Celebration in 2018.

As we reflect on Jannlee’s remarkable life, we celebrate her countless contributions and the positive impact she has had on all of us. Her legacy will continue to live on and be dearly missed.

Things you should know

Hamner Avenue Bridge – Now Open!

The newly opened Hamner Avenue Bridge, now spanning six lanes between the cities of Norco and Eastvale, marks a significant improvement in regional connectivity for Riverside County's Second District constituents. Replacing the old two-lane bridge, this crucial infrastructure project provides a much-needed alternative to the heavily trafficked I-15, easing daily commutes for thousands. Named in honor of former Norco Mayor Berwin Hanna, the bridge stands as a testament to successful regional collaboration and the power of federal funding, which helped bring this long-awaited project to fruition, greatly benefiting the local community.

Supervisor Spiegel Serves as Chair for County’s Election Integrity Workshop

On August 12, 2024, the County hosted a workshop on Election Integrity at the County Administrative Center, bringing together members of the Board of Supervisors, the Election Advisory Committee, and staff from the Registrar of Voters' Office, along with community members who were invited to attend. The workshop, which included presentations from the Registrar of Voters and County Counsel, served as a vital public forum where voters could receive information, ask questions, and provide input on the electoral process. As part of its ongoing mission, the Election Advisory Committee, which organized the workshop, continues to provide recommendations to the Board of Supervisors, the Executive Office, and the Registrar of Voters to improve the electoral process, aiming to increase both voter engagement and confidence in the integrity of local elections. To watch the full workshop, visit https://youtu.be/6-ds4Ox0LOs?si=KbikXmlYNck98WbH.

Supervisor Spiegel will chair the County’s Second Election Integrity Workshop with the Election Advisory Committee on September 11 at 1:30 PM at the County Administration Center (4080 Lemon St., First Floor). This important event will address critical issues related to maintaining and enhancing the integrity of our election processes. The public is invited to attend and participate in this crucial dialogue.
