Dear Friends and Second District Residents,
As the vibrant month of May unfolds, it offers us a plethora of reasons to celebrate, honor, and reflect upon significant observances and the diverse tapestry of cultures and contributions that enrich our community. This period is a testament to our collective history, achievements, and the ongoing efforts that shape our society. It's a privilege to share the significance of these observances and invite you to participate in the celebrations and recognitions they entail.
Cinco de Mayo, observed on May 5, is a day that commemorates the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, especially in areas with large Mexican-American populations. It's a day filled with festivities, traditional food, music, and dance, celebrating the resilience and spirit of the Mexican people. Let us join in this vibrant celebration, embracing the rich cultural heritage that adds so much to our community's diversity.
Mother's Day, celebrated on May 12, is a time to honor and express gratitude to mothers, grandmothers, and maternal figures worldwide for their unconditional love, sacrifices, and roles in our lives. It's an opportunity to acknowledge the immense contributions of mothers to our families and society, highlighting the strength, compassion, and nurturing that define motherhood. I encourage you to take a moment to show appreciation for the mothers in your life, recognizing their enduring influence and love.
From May 6 to May 12, National Nurses Week is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating nurses' critical role in healthcare and our communities. This week honors nursing professionals' commitment, dedication, and hard work at the forefront of caring for the sick, promoting health, and saving lives. In light of recent global health challenges, the importance of nurses has never been more apparent. Let's take this opportunity to thank the nurses in our community for their invaluable service and sacrifices.
May is also Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, a celebration of the culture, traditions, and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. This month-long observance recognizes the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to the past, culture, and achievements of the United States. It's a time to appreciate the rich heritage, diverse cultures, and the significant impact of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans on our society. I invite you to explore and participate in events celebrating this important aspect of our national tapestry.
Furthermore, May is designated as Military Appreciation Month, a time to honor, remember, and recognize the sacrifice and service of military personnel and their families. This month offers us a chance to show our gratitude to the men and women who have served and are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, with recognitions of Armed Forces Day on May 18 and Memorial Day on May 27. Through various observances and activities, we can express our appreciation for their dedication, courage, and commitment to defending our freedom and values.
As we navigate through May, let us embrace the opportunity to celebrate our diversity, honor the contributions of individuals and groups that strengthen our community, and reflect on the values that unite us. Let's collaborate to recognize these significant observances, fostering a spirit of appreciation, respect, and unity in our community.
Warmly,
Riverside County wants to hear from you!
Provide important input to your local government - participate in our new survey tool
Do you have one minute a month to help make Riverside County better?
Join your friends and neighbors and make your voice heard on important local issues.
The County of Riverside is working with FlashVote to gather valuable input from residents to inform decisions on programs, policies and budget.
“I firmly believe that our strength lies in the collective voices of our residents," says Supervisor Spiegel. "This is an opportunity, not just to speak, but to actively shape the future of our community. Your one minute can drive significant change. I urge every Second District resident to take this moment and be a part of Riverside County's future.”
The sign-up process takes less than one minute and the individual information collected by FlashVote is never shared with the County, nor anyone else. When residents sign up, they can determine if they want to receive the surveys by email, text or phone.
Residents will receive a notification whenever there is a new survey, and they will have 48 hours to participate before voting closes. Once a survey is closed, everyone who participated will automatically receive a summary of the overall results and be able to see how their responses compare to the group. Results are anonymous.
The county encourages residents to sign up now or call (775) 235-2240 to participate by phone or text only.
Participate in helping make Riverside County better. Your opinions on how local government works for you matter.
