Supervisor Karen Spiegel

Dear Friends and Second District Residents,

As we step into November, a month of gratitude and reflection, I am reminded of the diversity and strength at the core of our district and county. From the ancient traditions of our native people to the rich tapestry of cultures that have found a home here, Riverside County is a beacon of unity and diversity. This month offers us multiple opportunities to commemorate, celebrate, and acknowledge the significance of several observances that define who we are as a community.

Firstly, the end of October and the beginning of November brings us Dia de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead. Rooted in Mexican tradition, Dia de los Muertos is more than just a cultural event. It's a time when families come together to honor and remember deceased loved ones, celebrating their lives with vibrant altars, food, and music. This observance teaches us the importance of connection, memory, and the everlasting bond of family.

November 9-10 brings us the Kristallnacht Commemoration. The 'Night of Broken Glass' is a sad reminder of the consequences of unchecked prejudice and hatred. This event marked a pivotal shift in Nazi anti-Semitic policy and the beginning of the Holocaust. By commemorating Kristallnacht, we recommit ourselves to stand against bigotry and intolerance in all forms, ensuring that such atrocities are never repeated.

November also brings us Veterans Day, which allows us to salute the brave men and women who donned the uniform to protect our dear freedoms. Their sacrifices, both seen and unseen, have paved the way for our nation's enduring spirit of resilience and liberty. Below, we have compiled a list of Veterans Day events throughout the Second District. Be sure to stop by and thank a veteran at one of these significant events.

A time-honored American tradition, Thanksgiving is more than a feast. It's a moment to pause, come together as a community, and express gratitude for our blessings while recognizing our collective responsibility to support those less fortunate. This Thanksgiving, remember to thank those who surround us and give us strength in our daily lives.

Another tradition for showcasing America's generosity is Giving Tuesday, set for November 28. Giving Tuesday is a global day of generosity and charity, uniting individuals to support the causes they believe in. As we approach this day of giving back, we encourage everyone to consider supporting local nonprofits and communities. Stay tuned for our upcoming Giving Tuesday E-blast, which will provide more details on how you can make a difference in your community.

This month, we also acknowledge National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, November 5-11. Our Animal Services department is a testament to our commitment to the well-being of every living creature in our county. Their unwavering dedication ensures that countless animals find loving homes, receive essential care, and are treated with compassion and respect. This week, we offer our heartfelt thanks to this department and the incredible work they do daily. To learn more about what this department can do for your community, please visit https://rcdas.org/ or call 1-888-636-7387 (PETS).

Lastly, November brings us Native American Heritage Month. The original inhabitants of this land, Native Americans, have a rich and diverse history intricately woven into our nation's fabric. This month, we honor their traditions, stories, and the indelible mark they've left on our shared history.

Each of these observances tells a story of resilience, love, sacrifice, and unity. They remind us that our strength as a community lies in our shared values, mutual respect, and the deep connections we forge.

I wish all the constituents of the Second District a month filled with reflection, gratitude, and unity.

Warmly,

Spiegel Signature

Riverside County wants to hear from you!

Provide important input to your local government - participate in our new survey tool

Do you have one minute a month to help make Riverside County better?

Join your friends and neighbors and make your voice heard on important local issues.

The County of Riverside is working with FlashVote to gather valuable input from residents to inform decisions on programs, policies and budget.

“I firmly believe that our strength lies in the collective voices of our residents," says Supervisor Spiegel. "This is an opportunity, not just to speak, but to actively shape the future of our community. Your one minute can drive significant change. I urge every Second District resident to take this moment and be a part of Riverside County's future.”

The sign-up process takes less than one minute and the individual information collected by FlashVote is never shared with the County, nor anyone else. When residents sign up, they can determine if they want to receive the surveys by email, text or phone.

Residents will receive a notification whenever there is a new survey, and they will have 48 hours to participate before voting closes. Once a survey is closed, everyone who participated will automatically receive a summary of the overall results and be able to see how their responses compare to the group. Results are anonymous.

The county encourages residents to sign up now or call (775) 235-2240 to participate by phone or text only.

Participate in helping make Riverside County better. Your opinions on how local government works for you matter.

Things you should know

Riverside County Participates in Operation Green Light for Veterans

Supervisors Karen Spiegel and Chuck Washington have announced Riverside County's support for Operation Green Light for Veterans in collaboration with the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO). A ceremonial lighting event will occur on November 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the County Administration Center Building. This gesture is part of a national effort, with Riverside County joining 3,069 other counties, parishes, and boroughs. The County Administration Building will be illuminated in green from November 7-12, honoring Veterans Day on November 11. Both supervisors emphasized the county's dedication to recognizing and supporting veterans. The event welcomes veterans, the community, media, and local dignitaries to witness the ceremony and hear community leaders discuss the significance of Operation Green Light for Veterans.

Riverside County Amongst First Cohort of Counties in CARE Court Act Program

Riverside County is honored to be among the initial counties launching the innovative Community Assistance, Recovery, and Empowerment (CARE) Act program. This program introduces a novel approach to providing mental health and substance use disorder services to those in our county facing homelessness or incarceration. The county recently conducted its inaugural CARE Court hearing in late October.

Stop Signs and Crosswalk – Home Gardens Area

To bolster traffic and pedestrian safety within the Home Gardens community, we are set to install six solar-powered LED blinking stop signs. Four of these signs will be strategically placed at Tolton Ave and Grant Street, while the remaining two will be at the intersection of Grant and Harlow Ave. Furthermore, both of these mentioned intersections will benefit from the introduction of a "continental" style crosswalk. These enhancements are not only expected to augment road safety but also ensure a safer environment around the Home Gardens Academy for pedestrians.

Senior SpotlightKathy Barbay

Kathy Barbay - City of Canyon Lake

For the last 20 years, Kathy Barbay has spent numerous hours serving the community of Canyon Lake. Kathy's primary focus has been at the Senior Center. There, she is the chairperson of the work group board and works on a boutique that funds activities such as a Christmas party and New Year's Eve party. Funds also support the activities at the center.

Her main passion and activity at the center is quilting. She started groups that make quilts for veterans throughout the community. Approximately 100 quilts have been given away. She also belongs to a quilting group in Hemet that makes quilts for hospice and police department support.
She has participated in many other groups in the community, such as the women's club, Yacht Club, Mermaids, Fine Arts, and chair volleyball. While these groups have fun, she also helps them raise money to give back to the community through scholarships and other philanthropy organizations.
