Dear Friends and Second District Residents,
October is upon us – a month filled with the colors of change and a calendar marked with significant observances that beckon our attention and commitment. As we move through this month, I invite you to join me in reflecting upon, recognizing, and responding to October's many essential dates and observances.
Firstly, while many acknowledge Columbus Day, we must give equal importance, if not more, to Indigenous Peoples' Day. This day provides an opportunity to recognize the rich history, culture, and contributions of the indigenous peoples who were the original inhabitants of this land. It's a time to listen to and understand their stories, honor their resilience, and commit to supporting their rights and sovereignty.
Code Enforcement Appreciation Week (October 8-14) is particularly close to my heart. Our Code Enforcement department is not just a regulatory body but an essential part of our community that ensures the quality of life for all residents. They work tirelessly to address violations, promote safety, and maintain the aesthetic beauty of our neighborhoods. Their commitment goes beyond their duties, and we owe them a debt of gratitude. To learn more about what this department can do for your community, please visit https://ce.rctlma.org/ or call (951) 955-2004.
National Red Ribbon Week (October 23-31) is a nationwide initiative advocating for a drug-free America. It's a solemn commitment to ourselves, our families, and our children – promising to lead lives free from the destructive influence of drugs. With the rise of fentanyl-related deaths in Riverside County, now more than ever, it is imperative to pledge to be drug-free. For more information on the dangers of fentanyl, please visit https://facesoffentanyl.net/ or learn more through the County of Riverside Office of the District Attorney at https://rivcoda.org/dangers-fentanyl.
October is also recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every year, many of our loved ones face the challenges posed by this disease. It's a time to emphasize the importance of regular screenings, research, and, most importantly, to extend our unwavering support to those battling breast cancer. For resources and more information on Women's Health services in Riverside County, please visit https://www.ruhealth.org/services/womens-health.
Additionally, Domestic Violence Awareness Month reminds us of the silent battles many face behind closed doors. As a community, it is our collective responsibility to stand against domestic violence, support survivors, and educate ourselves and others about available resources. The "Sexual Assault Forensic Exam" (SAFE) Clinic of the Riverside University Health System works with advocacy, law enforcement, the crime lab, and the district attorney's office to bring justice to our community. This clinic is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you or a loved one are seeking help, visit https://www.ruhealth.org/medical-center/safe or call (951) 486-4000 and ask for the SAFE Clinic.
As we approach the end of the month, the spirited celebration of Halloween will see our streets filled with youthful energy and imaginative costumes. Beyond the treats and joyous festivities, let's ensure our children are safe, supervised, and adhere to community guidelines. With more residents walking and children trick-or-treating, October being National Pedestrian Safety Month gains even greater significance. It serves as a call to action for drivers and pedestrians to adopt safe practices, ensuring everyone returns home safely.
As we journey through October together, let's remember the essence of these observances and the many more throughout the month. Let's do our best to make a difference in our community in October and beyond. Your involvement, voice, and commitment can shape the district we're proud to call home.
Warmly,
Housing Urban Development Grant
Supervisor Spiegel serves on the Board of Governance of the Riverside County Continuum of Care and recently accepted the awarded federal grant of nearly $7.5 million to aid homeless young adults. It is the first grant for the community and the third-largest in the country. This grant, from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program, focuses on supporting those aged 18 to 24. Supervisor Spiegel emphasized the grant's importance in reinforcing existing programs and developing new ones for the targeted age group. The Continuum of Care Youth Action Board, comprising 15 formerly homeless young adults, will be instrumental in the grant's implementation, ensuring programs are specifically tailored to the needs of the youth. This new grant is anticipated to accelerate housing efforts further, reducing the duration of homelessness.
Van Buren Sewer Project - Woodcrest
On September 26, the Board of Supervisors approved the final funding necessary to expand a 2.5-mile sewer project along Van Buren Boulevard in Woodcrest. The collaboration between the Riverside County Office of Economic Development, the City of Riverside, and the Riverside County Flood Control District ensures the allocation of the remaining $3.5 million required for the project. This initiative is anticipated to significantly benefit local businesses and a public school relying on septic systems. Despite the joint funding agreement between the city and county last year, escalating construction costs necessitated the additional funds. The expanded sewer system will replace inadequate septic systems, promoting improved water quality and supporting future business operations. The entire project is estimated at $21.8 million, with the county providing roughly $10 million and the City of Riverside covering the remainder.

Support Sisterz
"Individually, we have all fought our own battles with cancer, some of us still fighting to this day. When you come to Support Sisterz, you come to a group of women who truly understand your fight."
Support Sisterz began as a small support group between friends - the “Founding Sisterz.” These women quickly felt inspired to reach out to others and were overwhelmed by the amount of women in the community in need of support. It was then that Support Sisterz was born. The organization's mission is to empower women in honor of their individual battles with cancer and in memory of their dear sister Cindy Moore, who before her passing encouraged them to continue helping other women as they had helped her.
