Dear Friends and Second District Residents,
With the Spring season well underway, we must be mindful of the beautiful growth that is happening due to all the rain. Although the flowers and greenery are gorgeous, it does mean that our fire season will be just as robust. Please visit Riverside County Fire for more information on keeping your families safe and prepared for this upcoming wildfire season.
As Mother's Day quickly approaches (May 14), be sure to give some extra love that day and every day to the mothers in your lives, whether it's a grandmother, stepmother, or a mother figure; the simplest gestures mean so much to us.
Did you know? More phone calls are made on Mother's Day than on any other day of the year. These holiday chats with Mom often cause phone traffic to spike by as much as 37 percent.
"Mothers are like glue. Even when you can't see them, they're still holding the family together." - Susan Gale
Armed Forces Day (May 20) is a day to recognize the men and women who have fought and continue to fight for the many freedoms we cherish. I ask that you take time to find a military member and their family to thank them for their service.
This month, we also pay tribute to Memorial Day (May 29). It is tradition to raise the flag on this day. On this day of remembrance, we take the time to honor the lives and legacies of our nation's fallen heroes. This is a poignant reminder of the tenacity of life. Our national cemetery and other cemeteries display flags on the graves of all those who've served. Placing flags is a treasured activity for my family and me to participate in and show our respect.
Prado Dam Update
Last May, we announced the efforts of repainting the Prado Dam Mural after a decade of hard work by many. You may have recently driven by this (at the 91 and 71 highway) and can now see the almost completed display of its iconic image of the 'largest' patriotic billboard. The original mural was painted in coordination with students from Corona High School (1976) and guidance from the school's Activities Director, David DiPiaolo, along with classmates and mural designers Ron Kammeyer and Perry Schaefer. This mural is especially meaningful to me, given my beloved mother-in-law, Flora Spiegel, was the Mayor of Corona when this initial painting was constructed.
Before the original artwork was defaced by graffiti and the paint fading through the years, the mural read "200 Years of Freedom: 1776-1976". It featured an image of the Liberty Bell, commemorating the Bicentennial celebration of America's freedom. The mural is prominently visible from the 91 Freeway and has served as a source of pride and patriotism for hundreds of thousands of commuters, visitors, and area residents for multiple generations, and it is a unifying symbol for the region.
Congressman Ken Calvert and I have worked with this great group of individuals for over a decade to make this happen. A big thank you to Colonel Julie Balten of the Los Angeles District of the US Army Corps of Engineers and Jason Uhley, General Manager of the Riverside County Flood Control & Water Conservation District, and their teams for their leadership and efforts in the repainting of the Bicentennial Freedom Mural. In addition, Eric Bjorgum of the Bicentennial Freedom Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles has been an excellent resource for them as well as Jackie Cherrington-Pierson, Peter Usle, Jim and Jeff McCabe of One Way Painting, and many others. A HUGE thank you to Dunn Edwards Paints and Rust-Oleum for donating all the paint needed to paint the huge Bicentennial Freedom Mural. We will acknowledge the contributors and sponsors next month.
I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your Spring season.
Sincerely,
|
