Supervisor Karen Spiegel

Dear Friends and Second District Residents,

Happy Spring!

Spring is the season of a fresh, new start. That's why April is a time we look to the innovators. The County of Riverside acknowledges the value of creating an environment that helps support innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship. So, with many significant advances in these fields, we recognize the month of April as Innovation Month.

As part of our Innovation Month acknowledgment, the county has many 'Fast Pitch' competitions. The one encompassing the Second District is this Tuesday afternoon, April 4, at 3 PM. It is hosted by the City of Corona and the Corona Chamber of Commerce. Five groups are competing for the prize money of $3,000. The Corona Chamber Board of Directors and Members donated these funds.

It is free to attend, and attendees will help judge the competition. The city of Corona's Council Chambers is located at 400 S Vicentia Ave., Corona, CA 92882. The winner from this regional competition will compete for the overall County of Riverside Fast Pitch – scheduled for April 27 in Riverside.

April is also National Child Abuse Prevention Month. We recognize the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect. Each of us has a role in ensuring children have positive experiences and families have the resources they need when they need them, well before they are in crisis.

In honor of this month's designation, we will be flying the Children's Memorial Flag in front of the County Administrative Center building for the month of April. Every day, an average of 63 new child abuse and neglect cases are reported to Riverside County.

"It takes a village to raise a child" is so true, as it does take an entire community working together to provide our children with a positive experience and grow in a healthy environment.

Keeping children safe is a community responsibility, and every segment of our society must be involved, including our schools, businesses, law enforcement, government agencies, faith-based institutions, and of course, parents themselves.

Working alongside the Family Service AssociationHOPE Collaborative, and the Riverside County Department of Social Services, we will help spread awareness, educate our residents and encourage child abuse reporting because prevention is key! No matter what challenges we face, caring for our children and responding appropriately when we become aware that abuse or neglect has occurred is our highest obligation. So, if you see something, say something. And together, we can prevent child abuse.

Together, we can prevent child abuse... Because childhood lasts a lifetime.

On Thursday morning, April 20, I will share the State of the County for the Second District at the Good Morning Corona event. It is an early meeting (6:30 AM for checking in and breakfast) and will be called to order at 7 AM with the presentation of Colors. The meeting will conclude by 8:30 AM.

If you are interested in attending, our office has a limited number of tickets available (first come, first served). Please RSVP to lallin@RivCo.org. These tickets do include a breakfast buffet.

Plenty of events are happening this month and next throughout the county and the Second District that are compiled in this newsletter. There are also county services and much more. I encourage you to read through this newsletter, click the links, and see what is available to you.

Have a wonderful Spring!

Sincerely,

Spiegel Signature

Nonprofit Spotlight: Reach Out

District Two is fortunate to have hundreds of nonprofits doing incredible work. Many of these nonprofits have a volunteer board of directors and positions where you can volunteer. Volunteerism is a great way to use your talents and share your expertise with others that need assistance.

Reach Out is dedicated to embracing communities to strengthen the human bonds that enable all community members to grow, thrive, and lead. Since 1969, the nonprofit has provided equal access to support networks, quality education, career options, and opportunities to develop skills to succeed.

Reach Out's mission is to strengthen communities by bringing people together to solve our region's most challenging issues:

  • Breaking barriers to educational achievement
  • Expanding economic opportunities
  • Creating safe, healthy, and innovative communities

The District Two team celebrates this nonprofit and its excellence in supporting our community.

For more information, visit the Reach Out website at we-reachout.org.
