District3 V5
Supervisor Washington

From the Desk of

Chuck Washington

Dear Third District Resident,

Black History Month is a time to highlight the central role of African Americans and celebrate their achievements. Since 1976, every United States President has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Beginning in 1915, prominent figures like Harvard alumni and historian Carter G. Woodson and Minister Jesse E. Moorland founded an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans and other peoples of African descent. This organization is known today as the Association for the Study of African Americans History, who sponsored a national history week coinciding with Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass’ birthdays on the second week of February. This very event is what inspired communities across the nation to organize celebrations and educate themselves on the contributions of African Americans.

First CSAC Exec Meeting of 2023

First CSAC Executive Meeting

In January, I led the first California State Association of Counties Executive Committee meeting of the year. We discussed the Governor’s proposed January budget with the Director of the State Department of Finance. As always, I am thankful for the opportunity to represent the County of Riverside and ensure that we have a seat at the table of such important occasions for advocacy.

Riverside County’s Early Childhood Education Investment

During our January 24th board meeting, my colleagues and I voted to invest $8 million in our next generation and the unsung heroes who work to help them develop. Early childhood education is one of my top priorities, and through this investment, payments will go to early childhood educators to invest in their facilities and staff. It is a win for our kids, our care providers, and working families.

Veteran and US Flag

The PACT Act and VA Benefits

Are you a veteran who was exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, or other toxic substances? If so, you may be eligible for expanded VA health care and benefits as a result of the PACT Act. This new law adds to the list of health conditions that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs may presume are caused by exposure to such substances. In turn of this, it will help generations of Veterans with deserved care and benefits.

NACo Jan 2023

National Association of Counties

Last month I attended the National Council of Counties Presidents and Executives meeting hosted by the National Association of Counties. This was a great opportunity to speak with individuals serving on the federal level about County policy priorities.
