From the Desk of

Chuck Washington

Dear Third District Resident,

The annual celebration of Black History Month first began in 1926 to honor African Americans, like Dr. Daniel Hale Williams whose contributions pioneered the way for future generations. In 1891, Dr. Williams founded the country’s first non-segregated hospital, and in 1893 performed the first successful open-heart surgery. Dr. Williams practiced during an era when African Americans were prohibited from working or entering hospitals. This year’s Black History Month theme of Black Health and Wellness pays homage to medical scholars who advocated for African Americans’ presence in medicine.

Sincere regards,

Chuck Washington Signature
