Give Teens a Leg Up On Risky Behavior with Redding Recreation's Junior Lifeguard Training
It’s not hard to believe that teens engage in riskier behavior when they are around other teens. Peer pressure is a real thing! In fact, according to studies, the teens' risk-taking behavior doubles when they are around their peers.
What might be surprising is the fact that teens in the 15–19-year-old age group are at the second highest risk of drowning - right behind toddlers. While the risk of drowning decreases after age four, it increases again during the teenage years. Ensuring that your kids are adequately trained in and around the water can help to reduce the risk.
Redding Recreation's Junior Lifeguard program can help kids recognize the value of safety in and around the water. Designed for kids ages 11 to 14, the program provides a foundation in water rescue and skill development, swimming endurance, basic water rescue, first aid & CPR for schools and the community, and stroke perfection. Knowing the associated risks may encourage kids to think twice when it comes to potentially dangerous activities.
Give your pre-teen or teenager the highest advantage this summer and help reinforce the value of water safety with the Junior Lifeguard Course! Courses are held in June, July and August and there is still room for your aspiring young first responder to learn some valuable life skills.

Travel and Tow Responsibly This Fire Season with Tips from the Redding Fire Department
Did you know that motorists are responsible for many of the wildfires that start along our roadways? Drivers often don't realize their vehicle is the cause of the fire until it's too late. Temperatures are coming in hot this Summer, but before you head out to the lake, river, or coast to cool off, take a look at these tips for reducing the risk of starting a fire as you travel or tow.
Do not park on dry grass or tall weeds. Heat from exhaust pipes and mufflers can cause dry vegetation to ignite.
Tow responsibly by not dragging any chains behind you. Use an appropriate hitch and ball to secure chains and check them periodically. Use a spark-resistant hose to cover the chains.
Make sure there is nothing dragging under your vehicle, check your tire pressure, and properly maintain your brake system. These can all create sparks, which can start a fire
Always carry a fire extinguisher in your vehicle and know how to use it.
If you notice a spark coming from your vehicle: Slow down, pull to the right, and stop as soon as possible in an area without dry grass or vegetation. If you are in the left lane, pull over to the right as soon as it is safe to do so.

What Were Redding's Crime Stats in 2024? The City of Redding Podcast Takes a Deep Dive
The Redding Police Department’s 2024 Crime Statistics Year-End Review is packed with significant developments. In 2024, the department responded to over 109,000 calls for service, a 6.6% increase from the previous year. Arrests also hit a new record, with more than 11,000 total, including a 32% rise in misdemeanor arrests.
But before you start panicking that crime in Redding has hit a new high, the City of Redding is pleased to report just the opposite. Despite an expanded crime reporting system (NIBRS), violent and property crimes dropped by about 21% each — a strong sign of progress. The rise in misdemeanor arrests is directly attributed to more policing with a focus on quality of life issues - which, depending on your perspective, makes Redding a safer city. Katie and Steve sat down with Crime Analyst Kristen Gurley, who tracks, analyzes, and organizes these statistics for the Redding Police Department to get the details.
