Public Release of Updated Health Endpoints Bulletin

In response to new research, CARB has updated and expanded the PM2.5 health endpoints quantified in our heath analysis of air quality plans and regulations. A bulletin describing these health endpoints and further background information is posted on our health analysis methodology webpage: CARB’s Methodology for Estimating the Health Effects of Air Pollution. The new and updated endpoints included in our health analysis method are cardiac arrest, stroke, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), minor restricted activity days, nonfatal acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), asthma symptoms/exacerbation, and work loss days.

Background

CARB is charged with protecting the public from the harmful effects of air pollution and developing programs and actions to fight climate change. As part of this mission, CARB makes publicly available the benefits of regulations and plans to reduce air pollution; these benefits are evaluated using robust scientific methods.

In response to Resolution 20-13, which calls for a comprehensive evaluation of health benefits from reduced exposure to air pollution, CARB periodically reviews new scientific evidence. CARB’s health analysis to quantify health benefits previously included 12 endpoints associated with air pollution exposure: mortality, cardiovascular hospital admissions, cardiovascular emergency room visits, respiratory hospital admissions, respiratory emergency room visits, nonfatal acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), asthma onset, asthma symptoms/exacerbation, lung cancer incidence, work loss days, Alzheimer’s Disease, and Parkinson’s Disease. For the full list of health endpoints in CARB's analysis, please see CARB’s Methodology for Estimating the Health Effects of Air Pollution.
