The California Air Resources Board (CARB) cordially invites you to a public webinar on updates to the statewide wildfire and prescribed fire emission inventory. CARB staff will present refinements to emission quantification methodology, expansion of activity data sources, and a new methodological framework for generating an event-based inventory by utilizing satellite fire detection data. In an event-based inventory, emissions are estimated for each day of fire and by their geospatially explicit location. These inventory enhancements will provide more detailed and accurate fire emissions information to support various air quality management applications and facilitate a better understanding of the impact of fire emissions on air quality. The inventory data also support tracking progress towards California’s statewide goals for climate change and land management.
Webinar Information
Date: October 16, 2025 Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Location: Remote Only – via Zoom
Please register in advance for the webinar. After registering, you will receive an email with information about joining the webinar.
Agenda
The webinar has three parts, each consists of a staff presentation followed by a 10-minute Q&A. Staff welcomes public input on data sharing format and technical methodology during the webinar. (Members of the public are also welcome to contact staff any time before or after the webinar for questions or suggestions as emission inventory is continually refined over time.) The approximate start time of each part is as follows:
-
10:00
Introduction
-
10:05
Part A: Emission Inventory of Vegetation Burned in Wildfire
-
10:35
Part B: Emission Inventory of Structures and Automobiles Burned in Wildfire
-
11:10
Part C: Prescribed Fire Activity and Emission Inventory
A 5-minute break is planned before the start of Part C. If Parts A and B take less time than planned, the length of the break will be adjusted so that Part C will not start earlier than 11:00.
Presentation slides will be available on the day of the webinar on the program webpage:
Additional Information About the Webinar Scope
This webinar will cover emission quantification methodologies and draft results for wildfire burning vegetation, structures, and automobiles; and for prescribed fire that is planned in advance and intentionally ignited to meet certain land management objectives (e.g., hazardous fuel reduction in forest). There are other fire emission categories that are being updated separately and are not part of this webinar: The agricultural burn emission inventory is being updated with the latest available activity data from local air districts, and no change to methodology or reference data source is being proposed. The residential waste burning emission inventory is being updated as part of the suite of area source inventory updates; more information can be found in the area source inventory program webpage. Emissions from isolated structural fire incidents that are not part of a wildfire are currently under development and will be available at a later timeframe.
