The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has verified that the Progress Rail Locomotive Inc. (PRL) SD70ACe-T4 locomotive powered with a PRL 1010J diesel engine, rated at 4,500 hp, equipped with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and a high pressure common rail fuel injection system achieves U.S. EPA Tier 4 line haul emission levels for particulate matter (PM), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrocarbon (HC).
The CARB verification letter for the SD70ACe-T4 line haul locomotive is available on our Locomotive Emission Verifications and Technology Demonstrations website.
Background
The Regulation for the Verification Procedure for In-Use Strategies to Control Emissions from Diesel Engines was created and adopted by our Board on May 16, 2002. The goal of the Verification Procedure is to ensure that verified systems produce emissions reductions that are real and durable under real-world conditions. Additional information on the regulation is available on our Verification Procedure for In-Use Strategies to Control Emissions from Diesel Engines website.
