Community Input Sessions: California’s Clean Car Future

Share your voice and learn more about California’s clean car programs

en español

Your input is invaluable as California Air Resources Board (CARB) staff develop regulations to reduce air pollution from gasoline cars and light trucks and enhance the process of purchasing and driving a zero-emission vehicle. CARB is partnering with local community-based organizations to host a series of in-person input sessions, along with conducting a virtual statewide input session. No registration is required, so please join us at one of these sessions to share your thoughts and help shape California’s clean car future.

We will discuss and seek input on the following topics:

  • More Stringent Greenhouse Gas Standards - CARB will update current requirements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from passenger vehicles to support California’s goal of economy-wide carbon neutrality by 2045.
  • Improved Window Sticker – CARB will develop an improved window sticker to provide consumers with helpful information when they are considering the purchase of an electric vehicle.
  • Local Transportation Topics – Local community-based organizations at each in-person input session will present on local transportation topics.

Background

About 50% of the State’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions are Produced by All Modes of Transportation and the Fuels They Use

Passenger vehicles have become less polluting, yet transportation and its associated fuels continue to contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, smog, and toxic air pollutant emissions. These pollutants directly affect your health, the environment, and the economy.  Clean transportation is critical to meeting California’s health-based air quality standards and climate change goals—especially in areas with the dirtiest air in our state.

California Regulations Lead the Way

CARB has been limiting pollution from cars and light trucks for several decades. In 2012, CARB introduced the Advanced Clean Cars program to help cut down on smog and greenhouse gases and require automakers to sell more zero-emission vehicles like electric cars. In 2022, CARB updated these regulations, known as Advanced Clean Cars II. Starting with model year 2026 cars, these rules require:

  • Stricter pollution standards: The rules will make it harder for cars to pollute the air with smog-causing emissions.
  • More zero-emission vehicles: By 2035, all new cars sold in California must be zero-emission vehicles, like electric cars.
  • Better performance for zero-emission vehicles: New rules ensure that zero-emission vehicles continue to reduce pollution effectively over time.

Advanced Clean Cars II did not include new greenhouse gas emission requirements for cars sold after the 2025 model year. CARB staff are currently in the process of developing these standards and we invite your input as we shape these new requirements.
