Background
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) and transportation nonprofit CALSTART developed Cal Fleet Advisor to ensure all California businesses can benefit from switching to zero-emission technology. In April of 2023, CARB approved the Advanced Clean Fleets (ACF) rule, which puts in place a phased-in approach to accomplish Gov. Gavin Newsom’s goal of switching the trucks that travel across the state to zero-emissions technology by 2045. Under the rule, some vehicle types where zero-emissions technology is currently available must start the transition by 2024. Other vehicle types have later deadlines, and options to switch a percentage of their fleets to meet required zero-emissions milestones. Cal Fleet Advisor was launched to provide personalized guidance for fleets and single truck owner/operators that may need assistance navigating the technical aspects of adopting zero-emission technologies.
For assistance navigating ACF, several helpful resources are now available, and questions can be sent to zev.fleet@arb.ca.gov. The ZEV TruckStop website is also available, offering up-to-date information on medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission regulation requirements, funding opportunities, ride and drive opportunities, upcoming trainings, market availability, and background information on zero-emission technologies. The website is available in Spanish.
