Background

AB 617 was signed into law in July 2017. CARB established the Community Air Protection Program (Program) to implement AB 617, which requires community-focused action to reduce air pollution and improve public health in communities that experience disproportionate burdens from exposure to air pollutants. AB 617 requires the CARB Board to consider selection of additional communities on an annual basis.

Since the inception of the Program in 2018, CARB has selected 15 communities to develop local plans to measure and reduce air pollution. The communities are either planning, developing, or implementing community emissions reduction programs. CARB staff works with community-based organizations, air districts, and the public to develop community recommendations for CARB’s Board to consider for selection annually. This year, the 2021 community recommendations will be considered at the February 10, 2022 CARB Board meeting.
