Public Webinar - Meeting California's Carbon Neutrality Goals:  Approaches for the Industrial Sector

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) Board Resolution 17-46 directs CARB staff to continue to evaluate and explore opportunities to achieve significant cuts in GHG emissions from all sectors and sources.  As part of this evaluation, CARB will host a public webinar to discuss approaches to increasing the industrial sector’s contributions to meeting California’s carbon neutrality goals.  In this webinar, CARB staff will give an overview of policies, regulations, and incentives being implemented in other jurisdictions to drive industrial sector greenhouse gas emissions reductions.  CARB staff will also review additional options that have been considered by researchers, industrial groups, and others on industrial decarbonization.  Finally, CARB staff will discuss initial concepts and solicit written feedback from stakeholders on potential CARB approaches to achieving deep decarbonization in California’s industrial sector.

Background

In the last decade, California has made significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and has reduced GHG emissions below the 2020 target four years ahead of schedule while its economy continues to grow. California’s 2017 Climate Change Scoping Plan Update (Scoping Plan) charts a technologically feasible and cost-effective path to meet the State’s 2030 climate goal. Beyond 2030, Executive Order B-55-18 establishes a statewide goal for California to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. In addition, Board Resolution 17-46 directs CARB staff to continue to evaluate and explore opportunities to achieve significant cuts in GHG emissions from all sectors and sources.

During its January 23, 2019, webinar on Carbon Neutrality in the California Context, CARB described holding a series of sector-specific meetings beginning in 2019 to gather information and to initiate dialogue on the potential role of each sector in achieving statewide carbon neutrality. These workshops and webinars bring together experts from academia, industry, government, and the nonprofit sector, and provide a public forum to explore approaches to making progress toward mid-century carbon neutrality across all major economic sectors.  More information is available on the AB32 Scoping Plan Events website.
