The California Natural Resources Agency, California Department of Food and Agriculture, California Environmental Protection Agency, California Air Resources Board, and Strategic Growth Council will jointly host a public workshop to discuss and solicit input on the development of the Natural and Working Lands Climate Change Implementation Plan (Plan) and associated 2030 intervention-based greenhouse gas emissions reduction and sequestration goal (2030 intervention-based goal).
DATE: November 2, 2018 TIME: 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. LOCATION: California Energy Commission 1516 9th Street, Sacramento, CA 95814 Rosenfeld Hearing Room
The workshop will include a presentation and discussion to gather stakeholder input on the development of the Plan and determination of the 2030 intervention-based goal.
The presentation and discussion will cover:
-
Finalized regional acreage targets for conservation, restoration, and management activities employed through State-funded investments;
-
An updated 2030 intervention-based goal for the Plan;
-
CALAND and COMET-Planner results and draft implementation scenarios used to inform the updated 2030 intervention-based goal; and
-
Next steps for Plan refinement and public release.
Background
Land-based strategies are a critical component of the State’s climate strategy. The Natural and Working Lands Climate Change Implementation Plan will set a pathway for State-supported action on California’s lands (including forests, farmlands, rangelands, grasslands, wetlands, and urban land) that emphasizes the role of California’s land base in achieving net zero or negative total GHG emissions. The Plan will identify a pathway for meeting the State’s 2030 intervention-based goal for natural and working lands. It will specify the scope and scale of activities the State can undertake to enhance the resilience of lands while increasing their ability to sequester carbon and provide multiple other benefits.
The Implementation Plan and 2030 intervention-based goal are an important step toward connecting our efforts on natural and working lands with the broader State climate strategy. Information collected through implementation of the conservation, restoration, and management activities identified in the Plan will inform the State’s next Climate Change Scoping Plan Update.
Workshop materials and a live webcast will be made available prior to the event.
