Dear MAQIP Stakeholder,

On March 18, 2008, the Oakland Board of Port Commissioners made a clean air commitment: Achieving an 85% reduction from 2005 to 2020 in neighboring-community cancer health risk related to exposure to diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions from Port of Oakland maritime operations.  In collaboration with a task force of diverse stakeholders, the Port developed in 2009 the Maritime Air Quality Improvement Plan (MAQIP) to guide its efforts to reduce DPM and meet the goal.

We are meeting our clean air commitment: Based on the results of the 2012 Seaport Air Emissions Inventory, the Port has reduced its seaport diesel particulate emissions by 70% since 2005, even while growing cargo volumes by 3%.  Achieving these reductions to date is a direct result of completed MAQIP emissions reductions programs and projects, and key regulatory deadlines.  The Port acknowledges and appreciates the hard work and collaboration with agency partners, the community, terminal operators, truck owners, and other key business partners and stakeholders to meet its clean air commitment.

The 2012 Seaport Air Emissions Inventory and related information is currently available on the Port of Oakland website at www.portofoakland.com.  The Port will be hosting a MAQIP Progress Report meeting on Tuesday, November 19 from 1pm-4:30pm at the Port of Oakland offices (in the first floor Exhibit Room).  The agenda is to:

  • review the MAQIP and its development;
  • present the emissions inventory results and provide information on the completed projects and programs;
  • acknowledge the many Port partners who assisted with the emissions reductions efforts;
  • announce ongoing and near term efforts; and
  • discuss next steps and future projects.

The Port looks forward to having you join this meeting to celebrate the progress made and discuss future opportunities for further diesel particulate matter emissions reductions.  Please RSVP to Laura Arreola at larreola@portoakland.com or (510) 627-1135 to confirm your attendance.  We look forward to seeing you soon.

Kind regards,

Richard Sinkoff
