Featured story
Sun Rose Apartments in Roseville celebrated its official ribbon cutting this week, marking the completion of final exterior renovations to the 82-unit supportive housing community.
The former hotel was transformed through California’s Homekey program into permanent housing for residents transitioning out of homelessness. Placer’s first Homekey project was in Kings Beach, and a third facility is planned in Auburn. Learn more about some of our past and future permanent supportive housing projects.
At Sun Rose, tenants sign rental agreements and pay 30% of their income towards rent. There is a 24/7 site manager and tenants receive ongoing services, giving them the opportunity to rebuild with dignity.
Recent Point-in-Time Count data reflect nearly a 10% decrease in homelessness since last year countywide, even as other communities have seen increases and the statewide homelessness rate per capita is more than triple of that in Placer County.

Before reinforced concrete became more widely used in construction in the late-19th and early 20th-centuries, granite dominated the industry for building sturdy, fireproof buildings and foundations. In Placer County, places like Granite Bay and Rocklin take their names from this important natural resource, which is spread throughout the region and forms the backbone of the Sierra Nevada.
As California’s population was booming in the 1850s and 1860s, local granite was used to build Fort Point and the defensive barracks at Alcatraz. Penryn granite was used for the foundation of the U.S. Branch Mint in San Francisco, and the private residences of wealthy Californians such as Charles Crocker and Governor Leland Stanford. Local granite is in the California State Capitol building, Placer County Courthouse and many other notable projects throughout California and the United States.
The process of quarrying granite is difficult and dangerous. Black powder and muscle were the primary tools used in the process, along with gravity, steam power and oxen. At the Griffith Quarry in Penryn, visitors are invited to walk the grounds of this historic site where many relics of the industry can be spotted, including anchor points, derrick mounts, wells, the original office building (which is now a museum), and even the quarry itself.
On Saturday, June 20, the Heritage Trail will include stops at the Griffith Quarry, the Loomis Library and the Rocklin History Museum. At 11 a.m., at the Rocklin History Museum, visitors can even see a historic and rare granite splitting demonstration by a local expert. Learn more
