This photograph, published in the Auburn Journal on April 30, 1953, shows outfielder and catcher Bob Hayashida of the Placer Japanese American Citizens League Baseball team kneeling with his glove, his uniform marked “JACL.”
The caption noted his standout performance the previous Sunday, when he recorded four hits in five at-bats against Nevada City, ahead of an upcoming game versus the Colfax Fireballs. Hayashida was a standout athlete at Placer College (now Sierra College) and later managed the Placer JACL team.
Baseball, introduced to Japan in the 1870s, became a cultural bridge between Japan and the West.
As Japanese immigrants settled in America, they brought their love of the game with them.
Exclusion from segregated leagues led Japanese American players to organize their own teams. The Japanese American Citizens League was founded in 1929, and JACL-affiliated teams flourished across the West Coast, in Hawaii and even inside internment camps during World War II.
