Hello North Lake Tahoe!
My name is Corie Heisler, and I am an Environmental Resources Specialist in the Environmental Utilities division of Public Works. My team oversees the Eastern Regional Landfill and Materials Recovery Facility as well as the garbage and recycling programs.
Green waste
Wildfire prevention and defensible space are on everyone’s mind and my team does our part by offering disposal options for your green waste.
Green waste such as branches, pine needles, pine cones, grass, and leaves can be brought to the materials recovery facility at 900 Cabin Creek throughout the year and during the summer we also have some free drop-off opportunities (and potentially more coming with your input through this Engage Placer survey).
There is still time to utilize the green waste punch card program that lets Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal customers drop off up to six cubic yards of green waste for free, but it ends Oct. 31. In addition to the free programs, you can rent a green waste dumpster for big projects and participate in the Fire District Chipper Programs.

I have been hearing from the community that not everyone is able to drop off their green waste and pick-up programs would be helpful. Curbside collection of green waste carts is the option that springs to mind for most people but there are several different options, and they all have different costs.
As I mentioned, my team has launched a survey through Engage Placer to hear from residents about which programs they would like us to adopt. This survey will be closing in mid-August so please take the time to have your voice heard at: engage.placer.ca.gov/tahoe-green-waste-disposal.
All of the green waste collected and brought to regional landfill is recycled and most of it goes to biomass facilities to create energy.
I’m really proud of our mixed waste recycling program, One Big Bin, that collects garbage and recycling together, and our team of professionals at the materials recovery facility do a fantastic job sorting out recyclable materials.
Collecting trash and recycling together means fewer trucks on the road and our community doesn’t have to worry about sorting their recycling. The outcome is also better because we have 100% participation in recycling from everyone, even visitors and tourists. It’s recycling and disposal made easy! You can learn more about our recycling programs and the materials recovery facility at www.TahoeOneBigBin.com.
Thanks for reading and reach out to recycle@placer.ca.gov if you have more questions for me!

This summer, unsafe, illegal, and environmentally harmful roadside parking was removed in Emerald Bay and replaced with a new shuttle service. Funded by Keep Tahoe Blue and the Tahoe Fund, the new shuttle service offers an easy, convenient and lake-friendly transportation alternative to access one of Tahoe’s most visited spots.
The Emerald Bay Shuttle Service eliminates unsafe roadside parking along state Route 89 from Inspiration Point to D.L. Bliss State Park, addressing the congestion and safety issues that plague this stretch during peak season.
Roundtrip fares are $10 for adults, and $5 for kids 13 and younger. The seasonal service ends October 15. LEARN MORE
