On June 29, 1953, actor and comedian Bob Hope and his family stopped for a meal at the Koffee Kup café in Auburn. Hope and his family had left Tahoe City that morning after a golf tournament and were on their way to San Francisco before stopping for a meal in Auburn.
Hope was born in the Eltham district of southeast London, England, in 1903 and immigrated with his family to the United States in 1907. As a teen, he became a boxer but made the transition to entertainer in the 1920s on the vaudeville circuit. Later, he achieved great success in radio, film and television. From World War II through Operation Desert Storm, he toured with the United Service Organizations 57 times, entertaining military personnel around the world. He starred in 54 films and hosted the Academy Awards 19 times.
He also sponsored several products in newspaper, radio and television advertisements. The July 2, 1953, Auburn Journal noted this funny exchange: “Merv Doolittle, the Journal photographer, grabbed his camera and went up to take a picture. ‘Let’s see that Pepsodent smile,’ Doolittle said. ‘Don’t work for Pepsodent,’ replied Hope, ‘I’m a Jello sponsor now.’ ‘…And do you know, everyone in the family had a bowl of Jello in front of them,’ said Doolittle.”
Bob Hope died July 27, 2003, in Los Angeles at the age of 100.
