 On May 12, 1932, two large guns from World War I were mounted on the grounds where the Auburn Veterans Memorial Hall was under construction. The now silent weapons of war joined a Civil War cannon on the grounds where they would forever guard the front of the building.
According to the May 12, 1932, Auburn Journal: “The larger of the two guns is an English 60-pound or five-inch field piece of modern construction. The gun was captured by the Germans and later retaken by the American Army.”
The smaller gun is a German 105 mm field piece that was captured by the American Army. The U.S. government shipped the guns to San Francisco and the American Legion transported them to Auburn, where they mounted them in place.
On Oct. 16, 1932, the Auburn Veterans Memorial Hall was formally dedicated with about 5,000 spectators in attendance.
