North Lake Tahoe Newsletter - March 2025

Hello, I’m Seth Warren, Placer County’s engineering manager for the Department of Public Works in North Lake Tahoe. We’ve got a lot going on and wanted to take this opportunity to update you on our upcoming projects in the North Tahoe area.

Placer County has four projects that will go to construction this year. The first is the Tahoe City Downtown Access Improvements project, which is an expansion of the existing parking area on Grove Street to provide improved pedestrian and bicycle access, along with additional parking opportunities for visitors to local shops, restaurants, and recreation destinations. We anticipate that initial work will take place this fall with new parking spaces and a paved trail installed in 2026.

Another project is a new traffic signal at the intersection of Grove Street and SR 28 to help safely manage pedestrian crossings and address traffic issues. While the signal is not scheduled to be installed until 2026, there will be some underground work happening this summer to ready the site.

Two of our other projects will improve recreational opportunities. Work will begin on Segment 1 of the North Tahoe Trail which is a new bicycle and pedestrian path between North Tahoe Regional Park and Carnelian Bay. We anticipate that tree clearing will be performed this fall with trail construction to take place in 2026.

The Lower Sawtooth Trailhead in Truckee is also planned to be repaved late this spring and will help improve sediment runoff from eroded soils and mitigate parking issues on Thelin Drive.

And finally, for a project that has been years in the making: The Federal Highway Administration is leading an effort to replace the existing Fanny Bridge.

The new bridge will pay homage to the more than 90-year-old existing bridge’s charm with the added benefits of bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides, new pedestrian crosswalks and signals, and the removal of existing piers from Truckee River. The contractor is expected to start preparing the site in May and closure of the bridge is planned Aug. 11 through Nov. 2. During this period, a detour around the area via the new State Route 89 bypass that was constructed during an earlier phase of the project will be available.

Additional information on several of these projects will be provided during the Placer County Board of Supervisors’ meetings at the North Tahoe Event Center in Kings Beach on March 31 and April 1.

You can also find the Tahoe Public Works team at the April 30 Discover and Discuss event at the North Tahoe Event Center. Come talk with us on any questions you have on these projects or others.

And check out info from our partners at Caltrans below as they have several projects in the region this summer, too.

ICYMI: District 5 virtual housing amendments town hall

District 5 Supervisor Cindy Gustafson hosted a virtual town hall meeting March 10  regarding the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s Phase 2 housing amendments for the Tahoe Basin Area Plan in North Lake Tahoe.

Last month, the Placer County Board of Supervisors directed county staff to initiate an environmental review process to align the county’s Tahoe Basin Area Plan with the TRPA’s recommended housing amendments. These amendments, which focus on 100% deed-restricted housing projects, are intended to support affordable, moderate-income and local workforce housing in the region. TRPA will proceed with adopting the amendments in the Placer County Tahoe Basin Area Plan, with the amendments scheduled for review by its governing board March 26. WATCH THE RECORDING

Last month, changes were made to Placer County’s North Lake Tahoe Parking Management Program to help local businesses in Kings Beach.

The board approved parking adjustments along Brook Avenue in Kings Beach, which include adding a 15-minute commercial loading zone on the north side of the street and making the remaining spots two-hour parking from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 1 through Oct. 31. The board also approved updates to the parking fine schedule and established a parking fee schedule, both set to take effect April 3. READ MORE
