On Aug. 13, 1980, Robert Brewster was enjoying lunch in a Dutch Flat restaurant while seated in his wheelchair. Brewster, a paraplegic after a motorcycle racing accident in 1964, was nearly finished with his goal of crossing the country on his motorized wheelchair. He left his home in Long Island, New York, on June 16 and stuck to mostly state highways. He motorized his wheelchair himself by refurbishing a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine he bought at a junkyard. He built the driving mechanism from discarded auto parts.
During his journey, he stopped at a Briggs & Stratton factory in Wisconsin. Impressed with what he was able to do with one of their older engines, the company donated and installed a brand-new engine in his wheelchair to ensure the success of his journey. When he grew weary, he would pull over and unroll his sleeping bag. He had no tent, no support car following and paid for the journey himself. His engine got between 70 and 80 miles per gallon, and though the top speed was around 30 mph, he maintained a steady speed of 20 mph.
He reached Auburn the next day and took state Route 49 to the Interstate 80 west onramp where California Highway Patrol escorted him to Taylor Road. On Aug. 16, he reached San Francisco where his wife was anxiously waiting for him.
